Non-Persistent Disk - Recovery from redo log file

$

0

Hi,

We  have a situation where a disk was incorrectly configured as independent non-persistent .Disk setting was modified and made as dependent and as obvious changes were lost.

We need to recover files from a date when disk were still non-persistent . Now we have storage level snapshot and were able to get base VMDK and redo log file.

After registering the VM it does point to redo log which shows size of 15 GB but  inside the VM ,still we are seeing the old data from a date when disk were made non-peristent.

So the question s there a way to recover data using redo log file(non-persistent disk) and base VMDK if they are available from storage level snapshot

ESXi 6.7 U3 and Realtek NICs (RTL8111C and RTL8105E)

Hello guys!

I'm new on VMware world, and I need some help.

I installed ESXi 6.7 U3 but my NICs aren't working correctly.

NIC 1: RTL8111C

0000:02:00.0 Network controller Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller [vmnic0]

         Class 0200: 10ec:8168

NIC 2: RTL8105E

0000:03:00.0 Network controller Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller

         Class 0200: 10ec:8136

After some research on the net, I found a driver (net55-r8168) for RTL8111C (10ec:8168) and how to integrate it on ESXi ISO.

It worked well for a couple of hours, then it suddenly disapeared from my system. Couldn't ping my server from my machine, neither ping from the server.

Then I rebooted and it come back... but again, after some time it's gone.

Now I don't know what to do with this two nics.

The RTL8111C don't work well as I said, and I couldn't find any driver for the RTL8105E. The last driver for RTL8105E only work up to ESXi 6.0.

Drivers used:

RTL8111C - net55-r8168 (https://vibsdepot.v-front.de/wiki/index.php/Net55-r8168)

RTL8105E - net-r8101 (https://vibsdepot.v-front.de/wiki/index.php/Net-r8101) - don't even integrate on ESXi 6.7

Deploying Edge via the API fails with error 10086

$

Goal:
Deploy an NSX Edge via the API. Doing so manually works perfectly fine, but when utilizing the API an error occurs which I cant seem to find the solution to.

Error:

{"errorCode":10086,"details":"Traffic shaping policy can be set only for a Vnic connected to a VMware distributed virtual portgroup configured with static port binding. Invalid portgroup network-738.","rootCauseString":null,"moduleName":"vShield Edge","errorData":null}

My current query iteration looks as follows with anonymization:

curl -k -X POST -H 'Content-Type: application/xml' -u user:password -d '<edge><datacenterMoid>datacenter-2</datacenterMoid><name>APICreated-LBSS-Edge</name><tenant>Default</tenant><vseLogLevel>info</vseLogLevel><appliances><applianceSize>compact</applianceSize><appliance><resourcePoolId>Physhost</resourcePoolId><datastoreId>VRTX-Test-VD0</datastoreId></appliance></appliances><vnics><vnic><index>0</index><name>APICreated-LBSS-Edge-Interface</name><type>uplink</type><portgroupId>network-738</portgroupId><addressGroups><addressGroup><primaryAddress>123</primaryAddress><secondaryAddresses><ipAddress>123</ipAddress></secondaryAddresses><subnetPrefixLength>28</subnetPrefixLength></addressGroup></addressGroups><mtu>1500</mtu><enableProxyArp>false</enableProxyArp><enableSendRedirects>false</enableSendRedirects><isConnected>true</isConnected><inShapingPolicy><averageBandwidth>20000000</averageBandwidth><peakBandwidth>20000000</peakBandwidth><burstSize>0</burstSize><enabled>true</enabled><inherited>false</inherited></inShapingPolicy><outShapingPolicy><averageBandwidth>20000000</averageBandwidth><peakBandwidth>20000000</peakBandwidth><burstSize>0</burstSize><enabled>true</enabled><inherited>false</inherited></outShapingPolicy></vnic></vnics><cliSettings><userName>admin</userName><password>123</password><remoteAccess>false</remoteAccess></cliSettings></edge>' 'https://123/api/4.0/edges'

The portgroupID has been found via the guide on page 16 of the API manual:
https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-NSX-Data-Center-for-vSphere/6.4/nsx_64_api.pdf

portgroupidinterface.png

It looks like my portgroupID is wrong or the resource is not valid, but im unsure why, it looks correct to me and ive tried both the name and the ID. Anyone who has successfully deployed an Edge via the NSX API who can spot what I'm doing wrong?
(If you feel comfortable sharing your own API query for my inspiration, that would be very appreciated as well.)

Have a nice Saturday everyone

"Cannot start service" error when installing Standalone Converter

[Note: I discovered question is probably more appropriate to  Home> VMTN> VMware vCenter™> Converter Standalone. forum, but unable to figure out to move it so created a duplicate post in that forum.]

I am a first time user. Please let me know if this would be better posted elsewhere. Thank you.

I attempted to install VMware vCenter Standalone Client ver. 6.2 on my Dell 8700 PC running Windows 8.1.  I selected to do a local install only. The install failed with an error something like "The service could not be started."

I tried to remove installation, reboot, and install again. Same problem.

It seemed to finish installing so I am able to start the application. But I get the following error message:

I go to the services control panel and the server service is not running

When I try to manually start it, I get the following error:

When I look at the dependencies, there are none:

running PowerCLI on vCenter

I am a developer for a storage provider, we have a vcenter plugin, and I want to interrogate ESX health, using vmkping and a few other utilities to check some ESX config parameters.

Another forum suggested powerCLI as a possible solution, my questions are:

- can it run on both VCSA and windows version? (We support 6.5 and later VC).

- how can it authenticate to the ESX's?  Escrowing ESX passwords is likely a non-starter.

Thanks.

Hi,

I had a Windows 10 2016 LTSB client that lost internet connectivity. It was using the default E1000e adapter, but I have now changed to vmxnet3. Are there known problems with the E1000e on Windows 10 as there was on Server 2012/Windows 8?

Can't copy paste from host (OSX) to guest (Ubuntu)

I'm using VMware Fusion 11.5.6.

Host is Mac OSX 10.15.6 Catalina and guest is Ubuntu (sorry don't know version number - how to check?) and I can't copy and paste from host to guest.

I thought the problem was VMware Tools because it wasn't installed. After enabling CD/DVD ROM device using linux.iso as the image, I was given an option to install VMware Tools when I booted the VM. A folder named "vmware-tools-distrib" opened up in the VM - I followed the instructions by unzipping the tar.gz file, running ./vmware-install.pl in terminal and got it installed.

After rebooting the VM again with VMware Tools now installed, copy and paste still does not work however.

Issues Enabling Workload Management with vSphere 7

I am attempting to setup Workload Management in a greenfield vSphere 7 environment with NSX-T and it continues to hang at "Error configurating cluster NIC on master VM. This operation is part of API server configuration and will be retried". I see the following in the wcpsvc.log file:

2020-09-08T16:16:54.416Z error wcp [opID=5f57bd08-domain-c8] Failed to create cluster network interface for MasterNode: VirtualMachine:vm-88. Err: Unauthorized

My vCenter, and NSX deployments are on the same Layer 2 segment. NSX-T is currently functioning, with a connectivity validated from a logical segment out to the Internet. I have also validated that MTU is 1600 throughout the environment.

How can I uninstall the vCenter Standalone Converter?

My vCenter Standalone Converter 5.5 installation is corrupted on a Windows Server 2012 R2 server.  Using the typical uninstall procedure through the Control Panel results in a "Could not stop service" message.  This is the message I receive regardless of whether I try to uninstall, repair, or reinstall the application.  Can someone direct me to a list of the various files and registry entries that need to be deleted to effectively remove the application to the point where I can reinstall it again?  Thanks.

2. In windows services i am unable to start vmware vpostgres showing depend services failed.

3. I went  to ODBC connection in system DNS and can see local server is refused the connection on port 5432.

4 . Even i tried to open port 5432 in windows firewall inbound rules but still port 5432 is not able to telnet and target machine is actively refusing it.

Setup cannot continue. Microsoft Runtime DLL installer failed to complete installation

I am newbie to virtualization. Have new PC with 64-bit Windows 7. Downloaded VMware-server-2.0.2-203138.exe. Double-click to run installer, see VMware server spash screen. Installation progress bar gets 90% done and stops. 5 sec later alert pops up titled Product Installation and says: Setup cannot continue. The Microsoft Runtime DLL installer failed to complete installation.

I've searched VMware forums and google extensively. Most suggestions point to registry problem. I've run CCleaner and Glary Utilities for registry fixing and I still get the same error. I don't have any Windows issues with this PC--everything runs fine.

Please help.

Thanks,

Plugin(local & remote HTML plugin) rendering issues with vCenter 7.0 and chrome v70

Hi Team,

We are observing rending issues for our local plugin with vCenter client 7.0.0.10100 and Google chrome v70.0.3538.77. In order to reproduced i had used vCenter client SDK 7.0 remote plugin  sample as shown in the attached gif. But plugins(local/remote) rendering works fine in later chrome versions say v80, v85 etc and on Mozilla firefox.

As per VMWare official documentation it supposed to work from chrome v50 and above.

Please clarify whether it is bug or any change in recommended minimum chrome browser.

Thanks,

Kumar

Best Practices for a Newbie

I recently inherited a production HP DL360 Gen9 server with  ESXi platform and will need to use it for virtualizing a file sharing system for a small office.    We primarily rely on a couple of Access databases that are hammered fairly hard by 10-15 or so simultaneous users in spurts across the work week.    Part of the "inheritance" means we lost the Nasuni fileshare that was previously housed on the server and we won't be replacing the Nasuni software.

I've been in IT a long time, but am pretty new to vmware and virtualization.

I was thinking to virtualize a Windows 2016 Server on the platform for the file share.    My main goal is speed/performance for the database access.    The databases are less than 3Gb in size.

The server has a RAID-5 array of traditional hard drives with plenty of space, and then also a RAID-1 array of 800Gb of faster SAS SSD drives.

I also have plenty of RAM for a small RAM disk - if that is appropriate to use for a dedicated "fast" database file share.

Should I try to split the Win2016 OS system partition from the data partition - and then place the data solely on the fast RAID-1 array??    Or would it be about as good to just place the Win2016 OS & data partition both on the RAID-1 SSD??

Would it be appropriate to set up a 16-32Gb RAM disk for super fast performance?

Are there any good documents discussing layout options for OS vs data vs disk type?   Or is this mainly just learned through experience??

Thanks for any advice!!

Running VMware Workstation with KVM on Linux concurrently

Hello,

I am using VMware Workstation and KVM on Fedora 32.

If I use the same user to run both hypervisors, the guest running under KVM would crash frequently.

The problem is reported in Fedora bugzilla 1876123 – KVM VM crashes, auto-reboot and hangs frequently when VMWARE Workstation VM are both running (FC32)

However, the developers at Redhat asked me to contact VMware and said it 's not a Linux Kernel or KVM problem.

Recently I tried to change the user that runs KVM. Previously it's the same user running both hypervisors.

The problem seems doesn't happened and I need further testing.

So, I would like to get some attention from VMware to see that is the root cause that of the crashes if I use the same user to run both hypervisors.

Thanks!

Hello,

How vmware uses host compute resources ? Let me explain.

On my computer i have two drives :

- C: it's a SATA drive 3.5" 7.2k

HyperV VM Conversion Issues

Hey all,

So I'm having a slight issue that I've not seen or experienced before with the converter tool.

I've made sure I've disabled UAC and made the appropriate GPO and updated the host file to make sure there's no DNS issues.

I'm using local Administrator account on the HyperV Host and the administrator@vsphere.local for the vCenter cluster.

A little more info on the topology

Source

2019 HyperV Cluster using CSV storage

Destination

Esxi 7.0d and vCenter Server 7.0b

Essentially I can create the job OK and it creates the VM on the VMware and then sits at 1% for around ~5mins and then fails with a "A file I/O error occurred while accessing"

I can SMB to the HyperV host and then into the Clustered CSV folder and copy the VM's VHD at around 800MBps from the server with vCenter Converter installed on it..

I just can't put my finger on the issue.

Thanks again

Matt

Hello!

I use:

VMware Cloud Director version: 10.1.0.15967236

NSX-v 6.4.6.14819921

Task:

Create a VDC Template That Includes Routed Networking via API

https://pastebin.com/PWVF8gQN

Try headers application/*+json;version=34.0 and application/*+json;version=33.0

When I instantiate a vDC template, everything is fine, except that the interface with the internal network is Disconnected.
