Run Docker for Windows and corresponding containers within VMWare Windows 10 session using the facilities provided by Visual Studio/Visual Studio Code

I want to run Docker For Windows within a VMWare Windows 10 Pro session. Right now, attempting to even start Docker for Windows in a virtual session results in an error message.

"Invalid Operation Exception:

Failed to deploy distro docker-desktop to ...\AppData\Local\Docker\wsl\distro: exit code: -1

stdout: Please enable the Virtual Machine Platform Windows feature and ensure virtualization is enabled in the BIOS"

I checked, the Virtual Machine Platform feature is turned on both in the host and the VM and virtualization is enabled in the BIOS.

Below is the TLDR description of what I'm trying to accomplish and why.

I have searched for that scenario and come up either empty, with very outdated (as in years too old) methodologies or with respondents who wish to change the OP's world view by telling them "You're doing it wrong, change your methodology to this..." whatever "this" might happen to be. Or worse, asking "why do you want to do it that way? Do it this way instead...". In all cases the respondents failed to fully understand the OP's original question, which amounts to: "Can I run Docker for Windows within a Windows 10 Pro VMWare virtual session and, if so, how?".

I understand the difference between Docker and VMWare, that's not the issue. I've been a VMWare user since their version 3 so I get how it works and what it provides. Am I a VMWare guru? Nope, that's part of the charm of VMWare - usually it "just works" and I don't have to care about the machinery beneath. In the course of my learning, I see that, properly configured, Docker is exactly the same - it "just works" - awesome!

I am a developer, I use Visual Studio (VS) as my dev environment. Microsoft has gone to great lengths to make VS work with Docker. Marvelous! Love it! BUT, the presumption by Microsoft is that VS is running on the host machine or, and I haven't tried this yet, running under their hypervisor. Never used hypervisor. When it first came out there were *way* too many problems with it and again, VMWare just worked. Never saw a reason to move off the VMWare platform and doing so now would be a major change for me, one I would very much like to avoid.

(update): I *have* tried running Docker for Windows within Microsoft's Hyper-V environment. With a little fiddling (as in a few PowerShell commands) it WORKS JUST FINE! The concept is billed as "nested virtualization" but turning on a few Windows features and executing a PowerShell command or two and Docker for Windows starts just fine within the Hyper-V virtual session and I can execute both Windows and Linux containers.

My situation is this. Because I travel a great deal I rotate between my own personal machine at home, a company desktop machine and a laptop when traveling, usually issued by DevOps whenever I have to go offsite so the laptop isn't "mine" it's whatever happens to be available at the time. Changing that scenario is way above my pay-grade, company policy is something I cannot affect.

My solution up to this point has been to use VMWare to create a session, keep the session on a portable SSD drive and simply ensure that I have either VMWare Player or Workstation available to me, company DevOps has yielded that much as I'm not affecting their "host" machine configuration. It then becomes a simple matter to tune my development environment to suit me with all the additional bells and whistles and custom configurations and other goodies I might desire. Since its my environment with strictly controlled access to the corporate network as designated and configured by company DevOps, they don't care what's on my session so I avoid all sorts of political red tape if I wish to try a new version of Windows (yep, even Windows updates come through them, we had to fight a major battle to get them to allow us Windows 10, 2004 and wsl 2!), try a new tool, install a new version of VS (updates to which come out now about every two weeks!), etc.

In short, by using VMWare sessions, my dev environment is exactly what I want it to be, totally under my control as I am the admin on the session and thus able to control group policy, etc. and...it's PORTABLE! *Easily* portable! I plug in the drive and viola! back to work and it matters not one whit which machine I might be working on!

Here is the kicker: We finally get to move to .NET Core and all the goodies associated with it and our C-level management has finally acknowledged the existence of Docker so now we get to play. Trouble is, when I went to install Docker for Windows into my Windows 10 Pro, 2004 with all updates, WSL2 enabled with both Debian and Alpine session running on the latest version of VMWare for Windows with full VMWare Tools installed, I receive the following error message:

"System.InvalidOperationException: Failed to deploy distro docker-desktop to ...\AppData\Local\Docker\wsl\distro: exit code: -1 stdout: Please enable Virtual Machine Platform WIndows feature and ensure virtualization is enabled in the BIOS."

I checked and both "Virtual Machine Platform" and "Containers" are enabled in "Windows Features" for both the session and the host machine and virtualization is turned on for the host machine and that's about as far as I can go - there is no "virtualization" setting in the VMWare BIOS for the session. I even took the risk and turned on hyper-v for the session (haven't tried that for the host yet, am waiting for a response here before I take that plunge despite the articles on MS and VMWare working together to make that "just work".

So, finally, the question is this: Is there a method of making Docker for Windows Desktop work within a VMWare session running Windows 10, 2004 with wsl 2 such that I might take advantage of all the goodies provided by Visual Studio and Visual Studio Code for Docker and, if so, will someone please provide the link to the instructions for configuring my environment, virtual or otherwise?

Why the relaionship between 3 widgets not work correctly

I have created a dashboard (attached ) that is include 3 widget :

1- Widget one show all Datastores

2- Widget two with select each Datastore it will be show VMs that reside on that datastore

3 - Widget three with select Datastore from widget one it had to show all disks on the unity that assign to that datastore

now widget1 and widget2 work excellent with select datastore on Heatmap it shows vms on that datastore but not show unity disks' that used for that datastore

I am using vrops8.1 and also install ESA for monitor Unity

Would you please import my Dashboard to your Environment and check it ?

Bridged network does not work - Cannot change network to bridged: There are no un-bridged host network adapters - workstation pro 15.5.6

Hi,

My windows 10 pro has been updated to the 2004 version. After opening the workstation pro, I did the automatic update to version 15.5.6.

After all, the bridge network was no longer available. In device management, the network drivers (VMnet0,1 and 8) have an exclamation sign. I tried to update but to no avail.

In the Virtual Network Editor, when I try to change VMnet0 to Bridged, I received the message:

Cannot change network to bridged: There are no un-bridged host network adapters.

I uninstalled VMware workstation pro 15.6, reinstalled versions 15.5.1, 15.5.2, and 15.5.5, but in all cases, the bridge network does not work.

I have several VMs, but all using the NAT network. Today I went to create a VM with a bridged network and saw that it was not connecting.

How much ram for best performances

Hi there,

I've just bought a new computer Dell Inspiron where I can install as much ram as I want.

I have 8 Gb so far and I was wondering what would be the right amount of ram to have the best performance.

I want to use ubuntu, mainly to do some programming with Visual Studio.

Would an extra 8 Gb be enough or should I go to a total of 24 Gb or 32 Gb to run it confortably ?

Thanks for your help.

Problems while trying to register for VMware vSphere Hypervisor 7.0

Hey guys!

When I try to register for the free version of the VSphere Hypervisor, I always get promted to enter company details. It also autofilled my private adress, city etc. that I entered while signing up (as a private person) into the company details. However, since I just plan to use it for private testing and learning purpose, I'm quite unsure what to fill in? Should I just close my eyes and enter something? Or is that some kind of bug I should contact support about?

I appreciate every advice that you can offer!

Regards,

Valentin

ESXi Missing Files in Multiple Datastores

Hello All,

We have an issue with two of our datastores. Both datastores have two disks in them. After moving our server, we booted the machine (unknowingly) with one of the drives disconnected. I've reconnected the drive and rebooted, but it seems like a number of files on the datastore are missing. I'm unable to run voma utility because it says that you cannot run it on vmfs datastore that use multiple extents (both datastores are made up of two extents).

The data we've "lost" is important, so anything that can help me recover it would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I have windows vcenter server(version 5.5) running on windows 2k8 OS.When i tried to connect to vcenter server using vsphere desktop client ...it is getting connected but after the span of few mins interval vcenter server service is getting terminated frequently.

My Vsphere  environment

1. single windows vcenter server(5.5) with 3 esxi hosts(5.5) with iscsi backend storage.

2. Vcenter is running with local database Microsoft Sql

3. Veem backup is installed and configured on vcenter itself to take snap backup

I can see event viewer has event id (7031) vcenter server service has been terminated (90 times)...and also found  vcenter server is running with older snapshot but not showing in snapshot manager.

Will older snapshot deletion reslove my issue? Any assistance and recommendation would be appreciated.

Kindly find attached vpxd.log file...

Thanks

Running out of space inexplicably

datastore1 is 9TB in size. I only have one Windows server in there that I created with two drives, C=50GB and D=8TB. Twice already it ran out of space and made the server inaccessible. I did some digging around and followed a suggestion to remove any snapshots, which I did and that cleared enough storage up so the server returned to normalcy. Today it happened again even though there are no snapshots. Looking into the datastore, there is the server.vmdk at 50GB and server_1.vmdk at 8TB, as expected, but I don't understand what server_1-000001.vmdk is? Is it some old snapshot file that remained even after all snapshots were removed? I left for lunch wanting to recharge before getting back into it and the server is up and running upon my return but I imagine it will happen again soon since the datastore is maxed out at 9TB.

Could you make it possible to directly run android 10 GSI (disk image) on VMware?

Could you make it possible to flash an image to a disk instead of an OS installation?

edit: making a bootable disk partition table and flashing the image to the partition does not work.

which is the higher serial number on an appliance 9BP00Q2 or H0PQY03

Might be an obvious question but what serial number is higher 9BP00Q2 or H0PQY03.

Just learned that when all things equal the serial number plays a role in Active/Standby.

Explanation of why one serial number is higher the the other would be helpful...Im guessing the Alpha (H0PQY03) is higher then numeric?

Thanks in advance

vSAN vSphereHA

hi

i'm trying to set this up dead simply in a lab.

i just want to see my tiny 8GB newly created VMGuest failover from one host to the other.

vcenter 6.7 uj, latest version.

3 virtual nodes. running esxi.

2 as nodes (1x50gb cache vmdk, 1x200gb capacity vmdk) identical. 2 NICs. 1x1GbE (management). 1x10GbE (configured for vsan).

1 as witness node.

i've enabled vSphere HA. i've enabled DRS.

all enabled OK as a vsandatastore. which i can browse through vCEnter.

i can copy files manually to the vsandatastore.

i've uploaded a virtual guest (windows server 2012 r2, evaluation mode, brand new. put a few folders on the desktop for fun). from vmworkstation. just dragged it across to the vcenter's datacenter and into the cluster, selecting the vsandatastore as the destination disk.

(what worried me is the 10GbE network wasn't going crazy when i copied this to one node. i've looked at s2d from Microsoft before now and it instantly starts synchronising to the 2nd node.)

i've run the vguest on Node1. happy days. i'm pinging the guest from a 4th machine.

disconnect the network cables on node1. to simulate a power cut on one node (or a motherboard failure - bang!)

uh oh!! no pinging. wait. wait. wait.

i'm clicking around. looking for an alert. i can still get the vcenter interface up and i look in there of course.

"lost communication with node 1"

"insufficient vsphere ha failover resources "

they're identical nodes. i can't click on the VMguest and click migrate. i can't click play. the vsandatastore is empty.

i just want this to be easy and work as expected in the theory books.... to see this working in practice and then i can decide if its to be good enough for production.

any advice, or links to youtube. for a practical implementation to see all the features working. would be appreciated. otherwise i've lost 10 hours of my life.

thanks very much

:-)

FIrst time dealing with virtual machines and I am quite lost. I don't have a physical cd/dvd drive so I followed some other comment I found through google and set it to ISO but that didn't seem to help much. Where do I go?

Horizon VMWare client on Ubuntu 20.04 not working

$

Hello,

My organization recently migrated our HVD clients from citrix to horizon vmware. I have a ubuntu linux based PC at home that i use to normally access my HVD. Citrix access was working very stable. With horizon, I am not able to successfully use my HVD. I have "VMware-Horizon-Client-2006-8.0.0-16522670.x64.bundle" installed on my ubuntu 20.04 distribution. after initial install, the scan function showed 3 libraries missing. on googling around, I found this was a common issue and i ran the suggested "ln" commands to link the libraries being looked for with those that were available. that error went away after that.

Once all installed, I tried to access my HVD. Here is the behavior i see  - when i log in, the horizon client does take over my screen for about 1 second and it looks like the HVD will become available, but then that window vanishes and i land back on the "VMware Horizon Client" window with my HVD showing as an icon in that window. if I click on the HVD icon to stat it, the same behavior is now repeated.

I have attached log files if anyone wants to go over them in details. here is what I see in the VMWare Horizon Client log:

2020-08-31 19:10:58.944-04:00: vmware-view 4484| cdk_pcoip_desktop_on_connection_state_changed: RemoteMKS connection failed.

Here is what i see in the VMWare crtbora.log:

2020-08-31T19:10:57.337-04:00| crtbora| I006: CUIMKS: cui::MKS::OnConnectedChanged (55AD28011430)

2020-08-31T19:10:57.337-04:00| crtbora| I005: SetConnectionState: MKS connection state changes from -1 to 2.

2020-08-31T19:10:57.337-04:00| crtbora| I005: OnConnectionStateChanged:2295: Entry

2020-08-31T19:10:57.337-04:00| crtbora| I005: GetConnectionStateReason(): remote mks did not set a disconnect reason code, so assuming it crashed.

2020-08-31T19:10:57.337-04:00| crtbora| I005: OnConnectionStateChanged:2335: Exit

Any help will be appreciated, thanks for looking.
