Get HBA firmware and driver version for all ESXi hosts

$

Hello, as you probably know the only way to find out about HBA firmware and driver versions these days is by running:

/usr/lib/vmware/vmkmgmt_keyval/vmkmgmt_keyval -d     to see which are the HBA devices, then

/usr/lib/vmware/vmkmgmt_keyval/vmkmgmt_keyval -l -i vmhba1/qlogic     to actually retrieve the needed  info for a hba. In this particular case I get this precious data below:

value:

QLogic PCI to Fibre Channel Host Adapter for QMH2562:

        FC Firmware version 8.02.00 (90d5), Driver version 2.1.50.0

which I need to retrieve from all my ESXi and save to a file. I enjoy writing simple powercli scripts but I'm puzzled about this one. I know that esxcli commands can be scripted too but what about this? I could script something with plink

$plink = plink path

$plinkAuth=" -v -pw $Pswd"

$remoteCommand='/usr/lib/vmware/vmkmgmt_keyval/vmkmgmt_keyval -l -i vmhba1/qlogic'

$command="Echo Yes| "+$plink+" "+$plinkAuth+" "+$User+"@"+$hostName+" "+$remoteCommand

$result=Invoke-Expression-command$command

$result

but as the command above throws quite some stuff I don´t know how to grab only the data output I need and save it. Obviously this is to compare with vmware compatibility matrix later. Anyone did this? I already checked Re: Host Hardware info with HBA and nic driver information but the following values are returned blank, and not sure those match the  ones above that I need. I already added  the -V2 switch to the script of that post.

Velocloud Orchestrator REST API updateConfigurationModule

I am able to create a new Profile in the Velocloud Orchestrator using the configuration/cloneEnterpriseTemplate

I can also get the specifics of the new Profile using configuration/getConfigurationModules

          "vpn": {

            "enabled": false,

            "edgeToEdge": false,

            "edgeToDataCenter": false,

            "ref": "deviceSettings:vpn:dataCenter",

            "edgeToEdgeHub": {

              "enabled": false,

              "ref": "deviceSettings:vpn:edgeHub",

              "vpnHubs": []

            },

I am trying to figure out how to update the vpn.enabled to true & vpn.edgeToEdge to true using configuration/updateConfigurationModule

This is the example body I am trying to populate to do the update:

     {

"id":0,

"enterpriseId":0,

"_update":{

"name":"string",

"description":"string",

"version":"string",

"effective":"string"

}
     }

Any help, like a change in endpoint or example of how to populate the body to update these attributes would be greatly appreciated.

Multiple Files Missing Workstation

Hey Guys,

Im having an absolute nightmare, I have a VM that is stating that path/osname-vmware-amd64-000011.vmdk is missing however when I look at that location the file does seem to exist so I'm not sure if this is corrupt,

Capture1.PNG

I can show workstation where the file is by means of browsing to it

Capture2.PNG

Which initially looked good as the vm starts to fire up but is then quickly prompts the following error

Capture3.PNG

I think the complications are due to me having multiple snapshots and having to previously reverted.

I do have live snapshots that I could revert to. however when I try that I just get another error stating the file couldnt not be located...

Capture4.PNG

Is there anyway to recover from this as this VM currently has my OSCP course that Im working on and loosing that data would set me back 3 months woth of training its really not an option for me. Failing that is there anyway I can pul the user documents data from the files ?

The problem I then have is that I dont really know where to start due to the amount of files ???

Please can anyone save my ass here ?

Hi everyone,

I am trying to install Workspace ONE Remote Assist based on the documentation VMware provides. I have done all requisites, generate certificates and so on. When I am installing the installation is aborted saying : Error: DTP Service Not Active.

Does anyone know what is that? I tried many times, different servers (virtual) but always the same issue.

VMWare Workstation 15.5.6 build-16341506 running on Windows 10 - very slow guest boot up

$

I have been using VMWare for years, and I have noticed a huge degradation in performance recently.

I run an operating system called SCO Unix Openserver inside of VMWare Workstation and recently noticed that the amount of time it takes to boot the guest OS has increased dramatically.

In the past the boot prompt for the OS would appear almost instantly after starting the guest OS, but is now taking many minutes to get to the boot prompt, and after initiating the boot sequence, the OS takes many more minutes to boot.

Once it boots, it runs as fast as it every did.

The system uses the blc scsi driver. The amount of RAM is very modest, just 768 MB. It runs with one processor / one core. I have tried disabling 3D graphics acceleration, but that had not effect.

This behaviour is noticeable on two different Dell laptops. I tried using vmware player on one of the laptops but the behaviour is the same.

Other guest OSes, such as Ubuntu, centos, etc. all boot normally.

I installed VMWare player on another computer, also a windows 10 computer, and after copying the VM from the laptops to the new computer, vmware player was able to boot the guest os quickly.

So, something in the how vmware workstation is configured or how Windows is configured is resulting in this new slow behaviour, but I don't know where to start looking.

Can someone suggest how to troubleshoot this?

Clustered VMDK Support Missing

Hello,

i want to use the new cool feature "clustered vmdk" to build a microsoft windows failover cluster. I tried to create a new datastore with clustered vmdk support. On the New Datastore page my device lists the attribute Clustered VMDK Supported set with No. I have no idea with the clustered vmdk is not supported with my device.

My storage is a EMC Unity 300 with OE 5.0 and connected via fc. Vcenter and all ESXi are 7.0.

Has anybody an advice for me?

Best reguards,

Matthias

Deployment from Template - Disks Datagrid in Custom Form

$

We are currently trying to change the storage reservation policy on a VM deployment, based on the request from the use. From what I've seen in this forum, the best way should be to use the disk datagrid in the custom form. But when we do so, we are unable to modify the original disks already included in the template.

Behavior:

Original template
Disk 0: 100 GB

Disk 1: 10 GB

The action used to fill the datagrid:

-------------------------

var disks = new Array();

disks.push({"is_clone":true,"initial_location":null,"volumeId":0,"id":null,"label":null,"custom_properties":"",

"userCreated":false,"storage_reservation_policy":in_StorageReservationPolicy,"capacity":100});

disks.push({"is_clone":true,"initial_location":null,"volumeId":1,"id":null,"label":null,"custom_properties":"",

"userCreated":false,"storage_reservation_policy":in_StorageReservationPolicy,"capacity":10});

return disks;

-------------------------

When we fill the data grid with those 2 disk, it is deploying the VM with a total of 4 disks... Any idea why ? We are under vRA 7.6.

Problem resolving AD users when adding new permissions.

Hi all,

I am seeing a strange issue that I feel is easy to solve but I don´t recall how to do it.

vCenter 7.0 latest build

I have added the vCenter to an AD domain

Then I added the Identity Source as IWA

Now when I try to add a permission and I select the domain name (in the dropdown box), when I type in the name of an AD user group, it does not resolve.

I have tried with various group names and user accounts and they do not resolve either.

Has anyone seen this behavior before and can tell me how to resolve it (maybe not using IWA)?

I already tried removing the identity source and leaving the domain then redoing it again but same result.

Get-VIEvent (or VIEventPlus): who unmounted a datastore and when

$

I am looking for assistance in determining who unmounted a datastore and when they did so. The unmounted datastore is generating a backup failure and I'd like to approach them to find out if the storage device is going away as well.

Get-VIEvent or Get-VIEventPlus are likely the tools I'm to work with, but I'm not clear on how to get the exact data I'm looking for.

For argument sake, let's call the datastore st290001no_prd_ds05. It would be nice to identify what cluster or esxi hosts the datastore was deleted from.

Bridge Networking causing issues for Host computer on network

$

I have used Fusion to run a couple of VMs in bridged network mode for some time. I have always been able to access the host Mac from other devices and use it as a jump box with team viewer. Recently this has stopped working on several devices that I use in this way. As soon as I shut down the VMs, the host is once again able to connect to other devices (firewall for example) on the network. What am I missing here? It seems pretty straight forward. My laptop still has the host IP and MAC in its ARP table so it knows it is there but it just won't respond.

All of the VMs are operating on VLAN 10 and it is that VLAN that I need to use to talk to the host. The host sits on a trunk port and other VLANs operate normally, just its VLAN 10 interface is "hogged" by the VMs.

Status of other host hardware objects alarm

What causes the "Status of other host hardware objects" alarm?

I went to the host's hardware health tab and saw some sensors with the status of "unknown". Is this the cause of this alarm?

If I reset the alarm to green, the host seems to be working normally.

Someone had this question before in the forum but the question was not answered.

Thank you.

No network connection between host and guest vm

Product: VMware® Workstation 15 Pro

Version: 15.5.2 build-15785246

Host OS: Windows 10 1909

VM Guest network mode: Bridge

A few days ago I installed the newest Windows Updates on my host system and I also updated my installation of VMWare Workstation to the latest version.

Today I wanted to use my previous working virtual machine.

Problem:

I can`t get an network connection (e.g. ping) between my host machine and my virtual machine (guest).

The wired thing is that I can "ping" the virtual machine from other computers on my network. Only the network connection between host (where the VMWare Workstation software is running) and guest virtual machine are not working anymore? (in both directions)

The host can reach all other computers, services, etc... on my network. Except the local guest virtual machine running in VMWare Workstation.

I already tried the following things:

- Disabled all firewalls on host and guest

- Both machines can reach gateway and all network settings are correct

- Checked that the correct network adapter is listed for "Bridge" mode and also tried specifying it...

- Re-Install VMWare network components

- Complete reinstallation of VMWare Workstation

Any ideas what could be wrong here? Many thanks in advance.

All available desktop sources for this desktop are currently busy

$

Hi all,

I'm working on configuring a RHEL 7 desktop that leverages an nVidia Grid GPU. When I try to connect to the VM through Horizon I receive the following error message:

"Error - All available desktop sources for this desktop are currently busy. Please try connecting to this desktop again later, or contact your system administrator"

I've tried the following:

  • Resetting the VM via Horizon
  • Placing the VM into maintenance mode in Horizon causes the error message to change to no desktops available instead of "busy".
  • Verified Horizon entitlements
  • Removing the VM from the Pool and re-adding
  • Verified the VM status is Available within the pool
  • Verified no sessions to the VM
  • Tried from Horizon HTML and fat client
  • Verified Pool and Client were set to Blast

The RHEL 7 VM boots and the GUI seems to "half boot". At the VM console It shows the RHEL 7 wallpaper but never presents the login box. I'm not sure if this is expected behavior or if this could be the cause of Horizon seeing the VM as "busy".

VM Configuration

  • All memory fully reserved
  • RHEL 7 VM w/ Shared Direct Tesla M10 GPU
  • nVidia driver (418.130) successfully installed on ESXi host and RHEL 7 VM
    • nvidia-smi works on both the ESXi host and VM and shows the M10
  • Blacklisted nouveau driver in the grub file and the blacklist file
  • Re-created initramfs
  • Updated xorg.conf
  • Installed the Horizon agent (7.10) and pointed it to the broker

Environment

  • ESXi 6.5
  • Horizon 7.10
  • RHEL 7
  • nVidia Tesla M10
    • Shared direct
    • M10-8q profile

Any ideas?

Thanks!
