Question :

vCenter Server Database Configuration Notes says internal PostreSQL database is suitable for up to 200 VMs. VSphere 6.5 Install Configure Manage course says internal database is suitable for up to 25,000 VMs. Why the huge disparity?

cve-2018-3646 vsphere 6.7 update 1

Hello all

I've recently upgraded from 6.5u1g to 6.7u1 using a custom Fujitsu ISO.  After ESXi hosts were upgraded, I was given an information warning:

This host is potentially vulnerable to issues descibed in CVE-2018-3636, please refer to https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/55636 for details and VMware recommendations. KB 55636.

The hardware is Fujitsu servers running Xeon E5-2620 v2.

Looking at the article, its suggests applying patch 6.7.0d.  The release date of the notice is 2018-08-14.

I'm assuming as I have 6.7u1 (release 2018-10-14) that this patch is rolled up in at and this warning can be safely ignored?  I just find this odd that I'm getting the warning after installing a later version?

Thanks for your help!

ESXi 6.0 & Win 10 1809: Slow disk performance on RAID datastore

$

Hello Everyone,

I'm currently facing a strange issue, where a Windows 10 1809 VM exhibits slow disk performance on our ESXi 6.0 hypervisor. For example, copying a file within the same folder will show write rates of about 10MB/s max.

The VM is currently running on a datastore consiting of a RAID-5 located within the server itself. I have 2 other VMs running on this datastore, both Windows Server 2012, and both show write rates of about 70-80MB/s, which seems much more acceptable to me. I also migrated the Windows 10 VM to a backup-datastore located on a QNAP NAS, here write speeds were about 50MB/s.

Looking at the performance graphs of the ESXi, it looks like the Win10 VM is somehow throttled to 10MB/s on the datastore, while the other VMs can happily go up to 30MB/s, so I'm kinda at a loss here.

Red marks the beginning/end of the file copy on the Win 10 VM

Green marks the beginning/end of the file copy on one of the Windows Server 2012 R2 machines

Task Manager looks like this during the file copy:

Performance Graph of the Win 10 VM (Datastore):

And CPU:

This are the current settings of the VM:

Here is what I tried so far:

- Disabling Anti Virus software

- Disabling Network Adapter

- Adding more vCPU and RAM

- Trying less vCPU and RAM

- Enable "Optimize Drives" Service

- Setting Custom Pagefile Size

- Disabling Accelerated Graphics

- Adding a new VMDK and copying there

- Using VMware OS Optimization Tool

- Cloning the VM

Has anyone encountered a similar issue yet and can help me solve this? I'm currently not sure how to proceed any further. If you need more information about the system, please let me know.

Completely Separate Cloned VM share the same Login to Websites? Whats going on?

Hi there, I recently remade a master VM on a newly installed SSD. This has been copied to make 6 new un-linked VMs with completely different directories and files. For some reason when I log into the same website across multiple VMs with different accounts it will log me out of the website and replaces me.

User A logs into the website on VM A

User B logs into the website on VM B

This results in VM A logging out and being replaced with User B on both VM A and VM B.

Sorry about this question hope it finds you all well!

Edit: On chrome, No logging in and all syncing is turned off. Unless there is something else other than the Chrome settings?

Edit2: Even logged into different Google Accounts/gmails on each VM. Still sharing.

Hello,

We have setup a mandatory profile for our View Desktops and I am curious to know how we can confirm the profile is indeed being used??  When I login to a view desktop, I look up C:\Users and see the mandatory.v2 folder however I also see a folder for the user logged into the desktop.

How can I know for sure the mandatory profile is being used?

Thank you.

We are running Horizon 7.x with windows 7 VMs.   On these, there is office 365 proplus 2016 64 bit.   Our biggest complaint we get is that excel is very laggy /crashes all the time. The SAN these are on is SSD, and there is plenty of RAM / CPU for each VM.   I am at my wits end.   Does anyone have any tips or tricks to get excel functioning in a usable state for end users?  Any help is appreciated

Unable to boot most VMs I create.

I'm at a bit of a loss here. I use VMWare Workstation 15 Pro on my Acer Predator Helios 300 (i7-8750H, GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB RAM).

The problem I've been facing on this device is that most VMs I create end up going to a black screen during the first boot or after a reboot, I can use the same settings on another computer and it will work just fine. When these VMs go to a black screen I am unable to shut them down, they stop responding, and the process cannot be killed in Task Manager. Rebooting the system and then powering on a VM *sometimes* works, but most times I just power back on to a black screen. Is my hardware not suitable for virtualization?

thanks in advance.

Hello,

I was doing some tests in my customer environment. We have a cluster, 6 ESXI 6.1 U3.

When I connect to the DCUI and I poweroff the ESXi all the virtual machines running in this server poweroff and move to another ESXi host, but they don´t power on. My customer complains because he says that HA is not acceptable. I think it´s the normal way but I didn´t find any evidence.

If you can help me.

Thanks in advance.

Unable to deploy NSX-v 6.4.0 controllers

Hi,

I'm trying to install NSX 6.4.0 in our test lab and when I'm trying to deploy the first NSX controller it fails in the vCenter Tasks and Events with the message: Operation timed out.

Selection_004.jpg

The log inside Networking & Security states the following:

Selection_005.jpg

And by looking at the log inside NSX Manager the first error in a long range of java exceptions is this one:

2018-05-02 16:04:46.479 CEST ERROR pool-45-thread-1 ResourcePoolVcOperationsImpl:196 - - [nsxv@6876 comp="nsx-manager" subcomp="manager"] Error while pushing file '/common/em/components/vdn/controller/ovf/nsx-controller-6.4.0-build7552024-system.vmdk'.
java.net.ConnectException: Connection timed out (Connection timed out)        at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketConnect(Native Method) ~[?:1.8.0_151]        at java.net.AbstractPlainSocketImpl.doConnect(AbstractPlainSocketImpl.java:350) ~[?:1.8.0_151]

After this point there's a full range of java related garbage messages that continues for ~5 minutes before it gives up.

It seems that the error message Error while pushing file '/common/em/components/vdn/controller/ovf/nsx-controller-6.4.0-build7552024-system.vmdk'. is quite important here, but I haven't found any solutions yet. So far I've reviewed different kb articles (VMware Knowledge Base, VMware Knowledge Base) that used to be valid for 6.3.x, but it seems that the problem is different on 6.4.0.

DNS is setup correctly (VMware Knowledge Base ) and time is synced on all levels so I'm wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before. This is a totally clean environment that was just recently installed from scratch.

Hello,

I have NSX manager version 6.3.3 Build 6276725 deployed with 3 controllers. In Networking & Security > Installation >Management all the controllers status is Disconnected. According to KB2151719 it's known bug. I followed the procedures as in the article, however when run API call of the step 3 I'm getting status code 200 but the body of the reply is the following:

Patch script completed successfully.

And all the controllers remain in disconnected status. Any ideas what could be causing the issue? What credentials are used when NSX Manager tries to connect to controllers and where can it be verified?

Thanks

Horizon View Admin 5.3.0

Horizon View Client 4.10.0 (Mac)

I have a couple of pools using floating linked clones. Recently, a couple of my Mac users are unable to connect to the pools. When they try, there's a delay of maybe 3-5 seconds then an error:

Desktop disconnected

The connection to the remote computer ended.

When I log into View Administrator and look at the events for the pool, I see:

User MYDOMAIN\myname requested Pool pool_name

User MYDOMAIN\myname requested Pool pool_name, allocated machine vm-3

The agent running on machine VM-3 has accepted an allocated session for user MYDOMAIN\myname

The pending session on machine VM-3 for user MYDOMAIN\myname has expired

I don't understand why it's suddenly stopped working. Any suggestions on fixes, workarounds, and things to investigate?

Problem with benchmarking virtual HDD

Hello guys

I’m benchmarking virtual machine in VMware workstation Pro and compare it with other hypervisors.

I have problem with benchmarking HDD efficient. I’am using cristal disk mark 6.0. I don’t know how but virtual machine windows 7 64 bit(guest OS) on wmware workstation pro 15.02 has better results than Host OS – Windows 10 pro. Is it possible?

Below are results from Host OS system.

Below are results from Guest OS system

These tests were repeated at least five times for every case: 500MB, 100 MB and 50MB. Presented tests are average results.

Can someone explain me what is happening? Maybe Vmware has some features what support and increase virtual disk efficient.

The same problem is in Passmark performance test Disk.

Below are results from Host OS system

HOST OS

DISK SEQUENTIAL READ – 180.5 MB/s

DISK SEQUENTIAL WRITE – 169.1 MB/s

DISK – RANDOM SEEK + RW - 9.7 MB/s

Below are results from Guest OS system

GUEST OS

DISK MARK 3471

DISK SEQUENTIAL READ – 358.6 MB/s

DISK SEQUENTIAL WRITE – 305.2 MB/s

DISK – RANDOM SEEK + RW – 296.0 MB/s

Virtual machine and HOST OS is placed on HDD disk SATA III.

Maybe I am doing something wrong. How should I do correct benchmark HDD and RAM?

CPU test looks correctly.

2V0-602 vSphere 6.5 Foundations Exam prep recommendations

Looking for community feedback on recommended prep strategy for Foundations Exam. I have many years of hands on experience with vSphere v5.x and v6.x but having a tough time figuring out if the majority of the Foundations exam questions are technical similar to VCP or more high-level (business use cases, licensing etc.)?

Looks like there are lots of exam practice tests out there for purchase that all claim to be good, but majority of the user comments state otherwise.  If anyone has a recommended practice exam that they felt truly helped them, please let me know.

Aside from a practice exam, I was either going to follow the Exam_Prep_guide "vsphere65-foundation-2v0-602-guide.pdf" and read through all the VMware documentation is referenced and/or look into purchasing the 115 minute video training prep ($247) offered by VMware (https://mylearn.vmware.com/mgrReg/courses.cfm?ui=www_edu&a=det&id_course=342947)

If anyone has taken the video training, let me know if you think it is worth it?

Thanks...
