USB Devices on USB C docking station

I have a HP Thunderbolt 3 Docking Station attached, via USB C, to my laptop which is running Windows 10 host. If I attach devices to the USB ports on the docking station, they do not show up in the list of removable devices in VMware Workstation so I cannot connect them to the guest machine. If I attach the same devices to the USB 2 ports on the laptop itself, they show up in the list of removable devices and can be connected to the guest.

I am running Workstation 12.5.5. but had the same problem with 12.5.4 (which was my first).

Can anyone help me to get VMWare workstation to recognise the USB devices on the docking station so that I can attach them to the guest machine?

VSphere clone on ESXi V6.7 - A general system error occurred: internal error

I am running VSphere and am attempting to clone an VM. I have successfully cloned 3 different VMs today on 2 different servers but this one is giving me fits.

The VMs are hosted on ESXi V6.7.

The host and guest are both in compliance according to Update Manager.

There is a base snapshot and the guest VM in question is powered down.

Compatibility is ESXi 6.7 and later (VM version 14)

The Datastore has plenty of room available on it.

Halfway through the clone process, I get the following non descript error.

A general system error occurred: internal error

digging into the log file on the VSphere server, I find the following.

The first sign of trouble seemed to be.

Then there is the error that was reported.

Any thoughts on what could cause this?

I can easily just load up a new OS, but I'd like to understand a bit more of how to fix this kind of error.

HTTP-Checks in VROPS 7.0 stopped working

Hi all

Since I've upgraded my to vROPS 7.0 all my http-checks stopped working. When the http-check object is stopped and started again, the collection status goes to 'blue', but never reaches 'green'.

No data is collected and after some time the collection status turns to 'grey'. Checked the agent.log but could not find any errors.

In my lab I deployed a fresh vROPS 7.0 appliance, installed the ep-agent on a Linux-system an created a new http-check. It's the same behavior. The http-checks does not start collecting data.

Does anyone here has seen this issue before?

Thanks.

Error deleting datastore on free licensed ESXi 6.7.0 Update 1

Hi everyone,

Ok, i have this new installed ESXi 6.7.0 Update 1 on a Dell Server with 16GB of RAM, 2 physical processors and 1T of physical storage capacity. I have licensed with a free key and i know i cant use vCenter with it, also i dont want to. I just connect directly and use the default embedded HTML5 client, ok? The problem is that at first when installed i could (playing with the system) create and delete datastorages normally but the next day it just throw this error and wont let me delete datastores anymore. I notice also that when creating a 500GB VMFS6 datastore, it wont let me create a second one. The datastore creation wizard just tell me i dont have free space when i have 1T available. Why is that happening to me? Please see attached pic to see deletion error. Thanks guys!

Hi , I have some requirements to execute some commands in PowerCLI for VxRail and I have to parse some information for further processing.

I want to do it in Java, please help me about how to execute a command using java for VMware PowerCLI  and to capture the output in InputStream as we do in normal java programs.

To be more specific, I want to execute a simple command like get-powercliversion in PowerCLI.

I get the following output.

PowerCLI C:\> get-powercliversion

Strange Host Responsiveness Issues

$

- Recently upgraded hosts to 6.7 and vCenter to 6.7a

- Hosts are 'not responding' in vCenter Server

- Can ping

- Cannot acess web interface or login via SSH

- Can access it via console, but after you enter login information and press enter it freezes (cursor is still blinking)

- If you remove the host from the inventory and shut down a virtual machine on the host it brings everything back online and the host can be re-added to vCenter

- Four identical hosts, has happened on three of the four (twice on one)

- The host that had this issue twice now will not come back after trying the above method and is completely unresponsive at the console

Slow Network Transfer Speeds between Guests

I'm currently experiencing slow network transfer speeds between Guests in my environment.  Current speeds fluctuate, but i generally get anywhere from 11 to 65 MB/s, with the average being closer to 20 - 35 MB/s. All VMs are on the same subnet, and vlan.  To help in my testing I created a 6GB file using the fsutil command. Again, I tested back and forth with the same machines, and I still got the same results.  The same is true when sending this file between VMs on the same host.  Shouldn't I be seeing closer to full gigabit speed, especially when they are on the same host?

My setup is as follows:

  • 2 ESX Hosts running 6.0
  • 20 VMs total  (2008 r2, win7, linux)
  • vCenter running 6.7
  • Gigabit switch physical switch with Link Aggregation.
  • iSCSI multi-path to Array (12 bay - 10 HD 7200rpm - 2 SSD as cache)

Things I have tested:

  • Crystal Benchmark - 200 MB/s from VM with sequential.
  • Shutdown non-essential VMs, to ensure more available resources.  Speed test had the same results as before.
  • Moved VMs to local storage on ESX machines.  No difference
  • Tested NICs without load balancing to ensure no faulty physical configuration problem.   No difference
  • Tried vmxnet3 driver - No difference
  • Tested with FTP- No difference
  • Tested from VM to physical - Speed increase to as high as 100MB/s, but wasn't consistent

Fusion v8 - Unable to open file

I run Fusion v8 on macOS.

1) I have a 3.4 TB server that I copied onto a new H/D.

2) I started the virtual server from the new H/D, and chose 'copied' before it started up.

3) Then I deleted the old virtual server (a few days later) to make room for new backups.

ISSUE: When I deleted the old virtual server, the new one would not start - asking for a .vmdk from the old virtual server location.

NOTE: when I ran the virtual server from the new location I right-clicked on fusion > virtual machine library > show in finder ---> this took me to the new virtual machine. It did not say anything about needing files from the old location.

Now I cannot start the virtual machine server, and I'm not sure how to fix it. I know all the files needed to start are in the new location, but how do I tell .vmx to not look in the old location?

I've attached the problem report.

Thank you!

Nested ESXi VMs always on 100 % CPU

Hello,

Regarding power consumption I would like to run a nested ESXi in Hyper-V on a Windows 10 computer.

This computer has the following configuration :

Hardware

28 GB RAM for the whole computer

240 GB SSD as hard disk

Intel VT and VT-x enabled

Software

Windows 10 1709

Windows Defender disabled (thought that it was the problem but it didn't solve), no antivirus installed

Hyper-V role enabled

Hyper-V VM

One ESXi 6.0 Generation 1 Hyper-V VM with 2 processors and 16 GB RAM. This VM was created  with Legacy Network Adapter Net-Tulip driver imported in ESXi ISO

Nested ESXi hosted VM

In the ESXi I created a Windows 2016 Server VM with 2 processors 4 GB memory and 40 GB Hard disk.

When I booted for installation, it took approximately 8 hours to load the GUI for Windows installation :-s From this step the installation was so quick as a normal computer installation.

After installation, it takes approximatley 4 hours to boot :-s, after this, GUI seems to work correctly. I didn't show during installation, but before  launching GUI, the VM has 100% CPU consummed regarding in the Esxi performance graph :-s

Is there a way to shoot this trouble ?

Chrome Constantly Refreshing Tabs on Mojave VM

$

On VMWare Fusion 11.0.2, I recently created a Mojave VM from the installer that was downloaded on my Mac host (Install macOS Mojave.app).  When I run Chrome on the VM, every tab constantly refreshes, to the point where it can take several minutes to type into any form on the page.  Even on the chrome://settings page, the screen constantly reloads and makes it difficult to perform any actions.  This is especially noticeable on Gmail login.

The Mojave VM has 4 GB RAM and 2 cores assigned.  When the flickering is occuring, the VM still has at least 1.5 GB available to it with a CPU load of ~60% User, and 14% system.  The Mac host still has 3 GB available, with a CPU load of 6% User, 23% System, so the host is not straining to run the VM.

VM: Mojave (10.14.2)

Chrome (Version 71.0.3578.98 (Official Build) (64-bit))

Hi Team,

I am a newbie in VMware workstation. I only know how to setup and run VMS the basic way. This time I have a need to run Internet on my guest machine on Custom Network (VMNet0).

Here are the below details:

Guest 1 - VMnet0 - 10.90.80.20 (AD and DNS)

Guest 2 - VMnet0 - 10.90.80.21 (application deployed)

I am accessing Application on Guest2 from Guest1 since they are in same network. There is a Custom Network between them (VMnet0) with no internet access on any of them.

I want to access internet in Guest 1 through my Host and at the same time also access Guest 2. How can I configure it? Please help.

Thanks in Advance

How to list users and reset password in ESXi host - with out SSH.

Is there anyway to list users, create users and reset password for a user accounts in ESXi server.  I can possibly use SSH, but I am looking for any vRO vCenter object that can run commands on the ESXi host.  I think even esxcli still needs SSH to be enabled to connect to.

Correct syntax to log into vCenter with vSphere web service SDK?

$

I have recently been put on a project to develop a driver for VMware.  First, the driver needs to connect to a vCenter.  I cannot log into the vCenter with either the ipaddress or the hostname.  I'm using the vSphere Web Service SDK using .Net and Visual Studio.  The only thing I know about this vCenter server is its hostname and ipaddress.  I've tried the login but I none of the most commonly used  port numbers work.  So I'm trying to hit it using web services.  However, I'm missing part of the syntax.  I don't know the name of the service it should return.  I'm using the following syntax:

url-- http://ipaddress/sdk --username user --password password [THIS IS WHERE I NEED TO PUT THE URL OF THE SERVICE IT LOGS INTO]

I'm trying to do this with the SimpleClient project in the VMware vSphere Web Service SDK 6.7 for .Net.  This should be simple but nothing I've tried works.  Can someone please give me an example of connecting to this vCenter and returning a service.  Since I've never gotten on this server I have no idea what services I'm looking for.  The syntax is looking for the url of the service it should return.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Determining capacity of PCIeSSDs that are PassthruActive

$

Hi everyone!

I have some PCIeSSDs that are being used as DirectPath I/O devices for my VMs.

While they are in this configuration there doesn't seem to be any way (at the vSphere-level) to determine storage information like their capacity or their storage adapter name. I feel like I've exhausted every path in the MOB and can't find anything beyond their bus location and their PCI class ID.

Is there something I am missing? Or is this just what happens when these devices are configured for DirectPath I/O?

Thanks in advance for any guidance ya'll can provide!

Optane for VDI, is it overkill?

$

I have a small VDI environment, only 200 Windows 10 systems with 8Gb fiber channel connecting to the storage array. We are looking at buying new equipment and have a good size budget for an HCI solution using vSAN. Off the bat, I expect storage latency to drop, just having it in rack, but I want to know if NVMe SSD with an Optane caching tier is worth it. Keep in mind we will be encrypting the vSAN.

I know, I know... it is workload dependent. I am just trying to get a baseline on if Optane is overkill for VDI.

I am considering 3 SSD configurations

1. All NVMe with Optane Cache

2. NVMe cache + SAS storage

3. All SAS

Also, please let me know if I am overlooking another storage technology that is better for VDI.

Cant see both datacentres using the webclient

Hi all, we have two datacentres in our Vsphere instance, DR and production, have noticed that I'm missing the prod datacentre when I login with the web client (flash) but it is visible with the Vsphere client (html5). Both datacentres were previously visible from the flash client. Running vsphere 6.5, already tried restarting the vcentre and psc servers. Appreciate it if anyone can provide any suggestions

VDI load distribution across multiple clusters

$

What logic does vSphere use to distribute VDI sessions across multiple clusters?

In our environment we have a set of XenDesktop 7.7 based always powered on non-persistent Windows desktops running across multiple vSphere 6.0 clusters (Single vCenter host connection linking to a logical datacentre containing multiple clusters). The problem is - few of the clusters are getting choked while there are plenty of free resources on other clusters.

So far, we have not been able to figure out if there are factors (Citrix or VMWare) that make some clusters more favorable to VDA session allocation. My understanding is that the Citrix Delivery Controller plays no role in VM election process during the desktop launch sequence and it picks a random VM from the pool of registered VDAs.
