I am trying to add a new column to existing VM list view by referring below code snippet from

https://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-55/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.wcsdk.pg.doc%2FListExtensions_Chapter.12.3.html

Below is the sample code given in chassisRackVSphere-ui  sample for the same.

<!-- Example of a VM list extension (not related to chassis and racks)

Using the extension point vsphere.core.vm.list.columns we add a 'hostname'

MY Query :-

I am trying to add a column to existing VM list view to display related Chassis Name (Custom) Object.

However when i tried to do that using <String>chassisName</String> i  am not getting proper query at java layer .

Can you please suggest a code snippet for plugin.xml which defines this querySpec.

As i want to display property/value in VMList view from my Chassis plugin.

Windows 10 x64 VM Player Corruption

Edit: Originally thought the vm was not on C:(os installation), but it turns out it is.  Sorry for misinformation.

Just wanted to post this here and know if I am the only one who is having this problem.  Or, if my SSD host is going to die soon.  Or maybe my sata3 cable is almost dead?  Samsung Magician shows healthy.  Checked ram (its fine).

When I make a windows 10 x64 VM using vmplayer 12.1.1-3770994.exe, everything seems to be hunky dory.  Then the symptoms start to happen ...  NOTE: This vm resides on C:(main OS installation). Host is Windows 7 pro x64.

First symptom:  Shutting down the OS takes a while.

Second symptom: Shutting down the OS takes a while + another long while and then a dialog box pops up that says:

[<VM TITLE> - VMware Workstation 12 Player]

The operation on file "<path>\s008.vmdk" failed.

If the file resides on a remote file system, make sure that the network connection

and the server where the disk resides are function properly.  If the file resides

on the removable media, reattach the media.

Select Retry to attempt the operation again.

Select Cancel to end this session.

Select Continue  to forward the error tot he guest operating system.

[Retry] [Continue] [Cancel].

Third symptom: This popup will continue, eventually "Retry" and/or "Continue" no longer works, and must "Cancel".

Fourth symptom: Corruption occurs soon enough.

Resize Independent Disk

Hello

I'm using independent disks for the first time.  I've been able to create, attach and detach disks without any problems.  I am having problems when I try to increase the size of a disk.  I'm following the instructions here: Update an Independent Disk  and I'm trying to increase the size of a detached disk from 50Gb to 100Gb.

The vCloud API accepts the PUT request with the new attributes but the size of the disk doesn't change.  When I check on the task in vCloud, it has run successfully.  You can also see a Reconfigure VM task has run against the disk shell VM in vCenter but it doesn't make the change to the disk size.  If I change the name of the independent disk instead, that change seems to take affect without problem - the Reconfigure VM task runs, the disk shell VM changes name and a GET on the disk object in vCloud API shows the new name.

I'm stumped here....   I can't see any errors when I make the request, the task run successfully, the are no errors show in vSphere Client and I can't find any related errors in the vcloud-container-debug.log file.

Does anyone have any experience of this?  Any advice/assistance?

thanks

Dave

Unable to authenticate via API on vCloud Director

I am having issues authenticating with the vCloud Director API. I am using the following cURL commands:

curl -i -k -H "Accept:application/*+xml;version=1.5" -u '[username]@[LDAP Domain]:[password]' -X POST https://[vCloud Director IP]/api/sessions

curl --request POST --url https://[vCloud Director IP]/api/sessions --header 'accept: application/*+xml;version=5.6' --header 'authorization: Basic [encodedCredentials]

and I get a '401 Unauthorized' return code. I am trying to connect to vCloud Director v8.10.0.3879706. The account I am trying to use in the cURL command is the same one I connect to the Web Portal as, which has System Administrator privileges. I have also tried connecting as an Organisation Administrator user in a specific VDC. I am able to get output from /api/versions, so I know the API is functioning.

Can anyone help locate the cause of this 401 return code issue? It seems to me it's a problem with how I'm formatting my credentials, but I can't find the exact issue. The credentials look something like this:

exampleuser@this.ldap.domain:Test$Pass%

Thanks.

Number VMs Reported by vCloud Director not same as vCenter

Hi,

I am trying to apply maintenance to some ESXi Hosts, so have Disabled host in vCloud, and Redeployed all VMs.

However, when vm redeployment is complete, vCloud total vm count says (for example) it still has 3 VMs on the host, but, vCenter reports 0 VMs.

Anyone any idea why I might have this situation?

vROps SQL Monitoring - Security Permissions and issues discovering/monitoring DBs

$

Hi All,

We are struggling to identify the correct set of permissions required to be able to monitor SQL instances and DBs in our estate. This is a 2 part question/issue, so bear with me

1)

What permissions are required to monitor both SQL instances and DBs? So far, we have the following assigned to our AD service account:

Windows - Logon Locally, Logon as a service. (As it happens, the service account is local admin, so shouldn't have any restrictions)

SQL - View Any Definition, View Server State, and also db_datareader on MSDB/MODEL and each user database.

In some cases, we're getting monitoring on the instance but not on the DBs, others we're not getting any monitoring at all. It seems very random, but permissions are consistent as far as we can tell.

2)

We have 2 vROps instances - PROD and NON-PROD. Both are identical versions, levels and policies, using the same version of the plugins.

In NON-PROD, we are able to discover SQL instances and the child databases.

In PROD, we only see SQL instances - there are no child objects - Checking inventory explorer in both environments we can clearly see that there are no objects of type MSSQL Agent, Analysis, Database, Databases in the PROD environment. Before anyone says anything, they DO exist!

How can this be? Is there anything we can check? Bit stumped on this one....

New-VM and ContentLibraryItem not working (Could not convert field 'error' of structure 'com.vmware.vcenter.ovf.library_item.deployment_result' error.)

Hi,

I'm writing a script that should deploy VM's from our content libraries. But so far my tests fail. I always get an Could not convert field 'error' of structure 'com.vmware.vcenter.ovf.library_item.deployment_result'  error.

New release: PowerCLI 6.3 R1–Download it today! - VMware PowerCLI Blog - VMware Blogs

Example from above:

I though this would be because of the missing name of the new VM, but it's not working either

Hosts randomly drop off VSAN cluster. Anyone have advanced troubleshooting steps?

$

We have a problem of VSAN hosts dropping off our cluster, and I'm not getting anywhere with the regular troubleshooting methods. I've had a ticket open with GSS and the VSAN team since July, but we've gotten nowhere on the cause.

We have a 4 host VSAN cluster that was perfect for the first year until we upgrade the VSAN from 6.1 to 6.2. In July we had host #3 drop off the cluster. The VMs are still running on it, but the clients briefly lost their connection to the VMS running on it.The host showed disconnected from the cluster. Attempts to reconnect it to the cluster fail with timeouts. Attempts to connect to it with a web browser fail, as do attempts with the original VSphere client.

I am able to connect to it via SSH, which proves VMKernel IP availability, yet attempts to restart the services hang. I looked at the VPXA logs from the client from around the failure time as well as the VPXD logs from VCenter, but I'm unable to determine anything unusual.

All servers are running on R730XDs and have the latest firmware/drivers from the VMWare HCL.

In August Host #4 had the exact same issue, then 3 days ago, host #2 now has the same issue.

The only way to get the cluster up and working again was to RDP into the guests, do a graceful shutdown of each, open them on a different host, then reboot the failed host, join the cluster, vmotion the guests back onto it.

Even the shutdown cannot happen gracefully as attempting to shut down via SSH or DCUI hangs as well.

Hosts are joined by Brocade VDX 10G switches which have no errors on any ports, only discards on the receiving ends. There are two distributed switches set up, one for VSAN (dedicated ports) and one for VM traffic/VMotion traffic. The VMWare managment network is separate VLAN, separate physical switches, on regular vswitches. The fact that the VSAN and management networks on only one host dropped off at the same time seems to point to the host.

I think that it is a bug with the Hosts' OS. Build number is 3825889

Anyone experienced this? Troubleshooting route?

Thanks,,

B

vCenter Server is going crazy after move to another datastore

$

Hello. I have a little problem. I plugged an ssd drive to my Gen8 and moved some vms to the new datastore with vcenter web client and option : move, only datastore.

Everything worked fine, perfect performance, etc.

Then I liked to move the vcente appliance (testversion) as well to the new drive. I was not sure, if I can do this also via vcenter and move options. So i connected to my esx client and went to configuration, datastore and search. There I marked the vcentre folder on the old datastore ans said moved to the other. When completed, I started the vcenter vom new datastore.

The problem is, that is seems not to be in sync with the esx. It shows me VMs running, which are not running at all. I also cannot kill the process via ssh, as there is not process runnning, only in the GUI. I also cannot move these machines.

Is there a possibility to fix this, or do I need to do a reinstall :-( Thx for help !

Como migrar de vcenter 5.5 basado en windows a vcenter appliance 6.0

Hola,

pues eso.

Actualmente tenemos una instancia de vcenter 5.5 sobre Windows, he instalado y configurado una instancia en vcenter appliance 6.0, pero ahora no tengo muy claro si desconectar del antiguo vcenter y conectar al nuevo vcenter siguiendo el procedimiento How to move ESXi/ESX host from one vCenter Server to another (1004775), me va a recrear las configuración de switch, que no son distribuidos, y resto de configuraciones que hacen que las vm's tengan servicio.

Un saludo

clean vCO 5.5.x appliance reinstall

$

hello!

So, my production vCO 5.5.1 instance is in need of an upgrade. Just to keep things as stable as possible, I'm planning on upgrading our production instance to 5.5.3, instead of going to 6.x or 7.x. Currently, we're running vCO 5.5.1 appliance backed by an Oracle database. The /etc/SuSE-release file says its version 11 patchlevel 2, which I guess is 11.2.

Approximately a year or so ago, I needed telnet and nmap, so I could do some network troubleshooting directly from the appliance, related mostly to workflow issues. Also wanted snmp so we could monitor the appliance. In order to do this, I pointed yast to the opensuse 11.2 repo, and then proceeded to get nmap, telnet, and net-snmp installed. This of course came with a bunch of package dependencies, which were also installed.

Fast forward to last week, and I took some scheduled downtime to upgrade this appliance to 5.5.3. This is when I ran into major package dependency issues during the upgrade process. The updatecli.log told me I had newer packages installed than what 5.5.3 comes with, which included some pretty deep dependencies like rpm. Try as I may, I could not find a good method to downgrade these packages back to the original, so I tried to "hack" around the problem. I tarred up the following directories:

/opt/vmware /var/lib/vco  /usr/lib/vco /usr/java/jre-vmware /etc/vco /root

Then spun up a new vCO 5.5.1 instance, and untarred them into it. The instance came up, but lacked packages, workflows, configs, packages - basically everything. So much for trying to outsmart VMWare.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to reinstall vCO while preserving EVERYTHING except for the appliance OS?

Design conundrum. Single instance or multiple?

$

I'm planning a vROps deployment to cover 2 physical active/active data center locations. I cant decide between the 2 options below:

1) Single instance at DCA with a collector at DCB

Pro:

This would allow me to build application groups for apps that span the DC's.

Single point for everything.

Con:

If we lose DCA, then we have no monitoring.

2) Separate instances at each DC

Pro's / Con's opposite of above.

Each location has around 2 vCenters each and I need vROps to cover them all. I'm not planning to use the built in HA for reasons listed here and will rely on on vSphere HA and backup instead.

Is there anything i am missing here? are these really my only options?

Service Contract Problem, No One Will Help

We are a small to medium sized company that has been running well for over two years now. After one year in service we were contacted by VMWare that our subscription and support needed to be renewed. The email included a quote which we paid through our re-seller and we thought everything was good.

Now, a year later, we have a problem and need support. We find out we got subscription only and no support. We go back to our re-seller who is surprised we didn't get support and he goes to his contact. There the problem begins. We can't get any response and today is the eight day! We need support and the problem is going to get critical one of these days, but no one will let us know how to get our support contract active.

Can anyone give me a contact that will respond that will help us get our support contract reactivated?

Thanks,

Bernie

ESXi host upgrade via VUM cmdlets

Hi,

I wanted to upgrade my ESXi host from ESXi5.5 to ESXI6.0 through "Vsphere Update Manager" and I am trying to write a powershell script for it.

Can anyone please help me to create baseline with iso images that are imported to "ESXi Images" repository in VUM through cmdlet?

Any cmdlet examples will be of great help.

My workarounds:

1. I am able to create baseline with iso images and upgrade via GUI.

2. I am able to create a baseline for patch upgrade and I am successful in upgrading the patch using the below commands

PowerCLI C:\> $UpdatePatch = get-patch -Product "embeddedEsx 6.0.0"

PowerCLI C:\> $UpdBase = New-PatchBaseline -Name UpdBaseline -Description "ESXi6.0U2" -Static -IncludePatch $UpdatePatch -TargetType Host

Hi,

Have something changed how you sync workflows to vRO 7.1?

Cant get workflow sync to work from vRO 6.0.2 to vRO 7.1

Between two vRO with same version 6.0.2 i just rightclick the workflow then

vRO remote synchonization
Hostname: fqdn:8281
Login name: administrator@vsphere.local
Password: xxx

When trying against my vRO 7.1 i get

"org.springframework.remoting.RemoteConnectFailureException: Could not connect to HTTP invoker remote"

Also tried 443

"Did not receive successful HTTP response: status code = 401, status message = [Full authentication is required to access this resource]"

Ive searched everywhere i can think of if something have changed but cant find anything.

Also have exchanged certs between the two vRO with Certificate Manager.
