I am trying to work out how I can start a APP Layer capture from the WebGUI in v5.8, does anyone have any pointers?

I can finalise one that I started from the Windows GUI, but I just can not seem to find the way to initiate a capture from the webGUI.

Thanks

Intel NIC's present but not detected sporadically on selective HP BL420c Gen 8's within my enviroment not sure why

This is driving me nuts and I would be grateful if anyone has any suggestions.  Within my environment I have a DR cluster comprised of HP BL420c Gen 8s.  On some of the servers I see two Emulex NIC's and three Intel's and on others I see only two Emulex NICs.  if I perform the following command I see that the devices/NICs are actually present (see attached photo)

command ....

lspci -v | grep -A1 -I Ethernet

(see attached for output)

I was hoping when I flashed the drivers using the latest HP disk and rebuilt the boxes with ESXi 6u2 that they would suddenly be detected however they aren't .  Is there some mysterious bios setting that I am missing?  To the best of my knowledge no special VIB's were installed on the hosts that correctly detect the Intel NIC's so I am baffled as to what's wrong

Thanks in advance

Extract ESXi host information from vm guest server

Hi All,

I have an issue with one of the vm's in our environment, what i would like to do is, extract esxi host information (hostname or IP) from a guest virtual machine running server 2008, could anyone help me with this ?

I know most will say it cant be done, others will ask why as it will expose a security flaw etc...Below i will try to explain to the best of my knowledge why i want to do this.

One/more of our system admins are a bit lazy unfortunately and have been cloning servers without running sysprep after the cloning process, as a result I have ended up with what looks like a vm powered off in the vmware console, however i am able to ping the machine, since its running in a terminal services environment, i can RDP to it and see that users are connected to the vm. Theres only 1 vm that shares the same IP and hostname.

Troubleshooting so far

- Search for hostname and IP address through the vSphere client

- Run a script that queries DNS names and IP addresses of all vm guests and displays its output

- Checked and matched up the MAC address of the NIC adaptor's

- Ran a couple of tools that also query vm hostnames and IP's to see if the output was the same as the script that was run.

Unfortunately the MAC address for the NIC is the same as the powered off VM, and the DNS queries etc all point to a powered off VM.

So i was wondering if i could get the esx hostname that the vm resides on from the guest, to carry out the next phase of my troubleshooting

Thanks in adavnce for your time

Hi

I have about 60 virtual machines in my vSphere 6 envirement. I want a list of what type of NIC that is in use on the different VM. Is it possible to get this in vCenter, or an other way?

Hi,

is there any document with recommendations in the number of appstack to attach to a VM and how to decrease the time it take to logon ?

Thank you.

all template names changed to "ds:///vmfs/volumes..."

Environment:

Recently migrated to a new VCSA 6.0u2 (new VC)

Recently began upgrading ESXi hosts to 6.0 as well (fresh install)

Everything was fine at first.

I just noticed that all my template names have changed to their full file path. What can cause this? I've already corrected this via PowerCLI script, but I am trying to understand the root cause.

Hello,

I am using vRA 7.0.1.

We have two users inside same BG and same Entitlement. I could not see provisioned virtual machines of other user.  I dont want to give administrator permissions for this user. Users must be normal user.

How can i see Owned By combobox for normal user?

7.1 (probably 7.0 as well) custom resource problem

I created a custom resource (Planet)

I have a workflow that ends with the construction of a new planet and if I create a XaaS blueprint that uses this workflow I also get to see that planet in vRA Items

XaaS Blueprint:

create_planet.png

item created :-)

planet_created.png

However when I add this XaaS Blueprint as a resource into another Blueprint with machines like so:

Then the planet is created in orchestrator, but this time I cannot find that Planet anywhere in items (not in planet, not in 'deployment').  Why?

Hi Guys,

I am very very new to Capacity Planning and vROps.

I'm starting to see vROps is huge! massive! but I think what I need is something very simple I hope...

I need to be able to show either through a dashboard or a report that my VMs are spec'd optimally. By this I mean it shows me for example a VM has 8 vCPU and 64gb RAM, but it doesnt need it and could be stripped to 4vCPU and 32gb RAM.

Is this possible? if so, could you guys provide me some direction on how I could configure this and demo it as I'm on a trial version at the moment?

thanks

vSAN GUI Object MGT?

Just starting to learn VSAN.  Starting with fresh vSAN 6.2.  Learning with Nested Cluster on a single PE T610 backed by local disks.  Just playing with two node + witness.  Nested VSAN hosts have Disk groups backed by separate RAID1s on T610.  Fake SSD vdisk+ 4 15GB vdisks.  2 vsan vmk/subnets.

Playing with it for few days and everything seemed to be working.  Though...very poor performance.  It is all meant for learning so wasn't concerned.  This morning playing with performance stress test and it failed.  And did some damage  Vsan health check then informed about 32 inaccessible objects.

So began learning the procedure for vsan object management.  Nightmare.  After several hours learning objtool + RVC I am amazed how crazy this is to not have a GUI for object management + tools to purge objects in bulk.  Only found mass purge for vswap.

For fun I ran stress test again...inaccessible objects doubled again...vsan overhead on capacity keeps growing.  I'm sure the Nested environment is causing this issue but it really has me wondering about management of vSAN in large environment....

It cannot be that Vmware wants each UUID manually entered to delete these objects.  Jumping between ESXI host console objtool + Ruby console?  All CLI?  No centralized GUI?

Does Vmware have intention of putting more attention on vSAN object management?  I hope it's not here is because its being developed for HTML5 web client.

P.S.  If you know why stress test is failing and leaving all these inaccessible objects please share

Thanks.  TTFN.

vRA 7 - Machine Placement question

$

Hey guys,

I have a requirement to place VM's on the correct hosts/storage depending on whether their hostname ends in an odd or even number.

Example:

A cluster split across two racks in the datacenter. The customer requires that odd and even VMs are kept on separate sides of the cluster. E.g Odd VMs on odd hosts and odd datastores.

Placing VMs on the correct hosts isn't an issue as DRS groups can be used. However I'm unsure of the best way to ensure that VM's are placed on the right datastores within the cluster.

In vRA we obviously have Storage Reservation Policies, however I need the correct to be dynamically assigned to VM during the request, based on the name of the VM.

I've been down this path before, but with reservation policies, and had to resort to using XaaS blueprints to submit the IaaS requests with the correct data. However this time it's not really a feasible option as the customer doesn't really have any in house vRA/vRO skills.. So leaving them with a complex / hard to manage solution isn't the best way forward.

Would appreciate anyone's input on this!

Thanks
Craig

SRM & vSphere Replication (version 6.1) - Reprotect

$

So I've run a recovery plan (single VM for now) without error (planned migration). I have my original VM powered off in my production site and my recovered VM running in my DR site. I'm trying to run a reprotect (using the original VMDKs as seeds). When I run the reprotect action I get the following error:

"Unable to configure replication for virtual machine 'MyVM' because group 'MyVM' cannot be created. Another virtual machine 'MyVM' that has the same instance UUID '5001e2c6-d3e3-16c3-3da3-4e4fcc0e1c62' already exists on protection site 'DRSITE'"

I'm interpreting this as being because the reprotect is attempting to create a placeholder VM back in the production site using the same instance UUID of the VM that is now running in the DR site. However, I already have a (powered off) VM in my production site with this UUID - my original production VM. I'm assuming that if I unregister this VM from vcenter then the problem will be resolved so will confirm this imminently. However, I've not found any documentation of the "planned migration" process that confirms that this step is necessary and expected, so am concerned that my environment is behaving correctly. Can anyone confirm that this behaviour is expected?

Hi Forks,

I wanted to try Ubuntu Maas and Juju on vmware workstation-11, I did manage to install Maas and commission a VM but my problem is I can't power on the VM from Maas web UI because as Ubuntu advise I have to configure power type as virsh, from this point on wards I have complete confusion.

Can any one explain how to figure out this mess where I am banging my head against the wall for weeks.

UEM Configuration Share access

$

Hi!

So... I have a bit of a problem managing my companies UEM Users. I suddenly cannot make changes to users' configuration share.

1) I Have read/write access to the share paths in Explorer.

2) I previously had access using my administration credentials.

3) Checking AD, I have the correct groups associated with administering UEM.

I'm not entirely sure where to go with this. The team above me who takes care of the servers doesn't know why this is happening, either... and this is a problem because UEM tickets are piling up.

Any comments, questions, statements are welcome. Like I said, I don't know where to take this.
