Windows machine name when using event broker - is it possible?
Hey, I have some issue when using the event broker to name and create my VMs.
I have a custom form, where the user can specify X names of their machines they wanna create. When the dispatch the request, X machines with my machine prefix, e.g. 2016-xxx are created.
I have created a workflow, which catch this my the event broker as a blocking event, which allows me to modify the vCAC entity before the machine is build.. E.g. I set the VirtualMachineName to fit the name request the user made. Its working well. The machine gets right name in both VC, vCAC and the actually Windows names as well..
I do the following:

The actual name change happens in
vmEntityProps.remove('VirtualMachineName');
vmEntityProps.put('VirtualMachineName', hostname);
So far, so good.
My issue - and frustration - is, that in Active Directory I have to machines created for the request. One object for the 2016-xxx and one with the new name.
If I destroy the machine again, only the object 2016-xxx will be removed.
This is odd!!
It seems that the AD account (2016-xxx) is actually created prior to reaching the PRE - BuildMachine state in the event broker..
I have tried to update the property "ext.policy.activedirectory.machineName" in the blocking PRE buildmachine, but it is too late.. It has no affect. It only works, if it is set directly on my custom form.
Do you manually create the AD object with an earlier event broker state, or rename the pre-created to the actually new name or something completely different?
I would be nice to have the object created as early as possible to it is being "reserved" in AD..
How do you deal with this?

Kernel Security Check Failure after Updating Host to Windows 10 Build 18298.1000
The computer just crashes wish the Blue Screen of Death showing the error KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE anytime I try to run a Virtual Machine, no matter which guest operating system I try to run.

Skyline Advisor - Why can I not expand my Collector to see further information
I cannot expand my Collector to see any further information. When I go to Proactive Finding I see the message: There is no finding available for this account.

Skyline 1.4 no networking detected.
What is the default login id and password to be able to access the skyline 1.4 box to be able to run the requested configuration script. This product is useless when asking to open web browser to 0.0.0.0 to configure.

A contractor setup skyline and now he has left I believe his user id is setup against the account id
Do I have to de-register the collector and put it against my name or can i leave it as it is and look at the data in the skyline portal online

Could use automated HCL Checker in Skyline Advisor
So far the things I get is just 'upgrade because you are not on latest version' kind of advisory or a L1TerminalFault patch missing. Sure it's great to have a reminder now and then and great to see a list of the bugs they correct but what I really miss for this to be a "Great Tool' is HCL Host Checker.
Like incorporate something similar to the ESXi Compability Checker Fling into this

so we can see if there is any needed driver/firmware-updates because of bugs or if we are running on an unsupported driver/firmware/hardware.
Also list what version of supported ESXi-versions the Hosts can upgrade to.
This is way more valuable to me than the current information coming out of Skyline and saves us much more time.
Any chance this is/will be on the list to implement or is it out of scope for this product?

VSAN disk group testing
Hi All,
VSAN rigorous testing.I have some doubts again,Could some one please clarify my doubts if possible?
My setup is as follows:-
3 ESXi servers with 6.7.0
7 test windows/Linux VMs are running including VCSA 6.7.0
VSAN version is 6.7.0 with allflash configurations.
DG---->2* 2TB SSD disk/per ESXi host(each ESXi host has one disk group and 1* 2TB is going for cache tier and another 1* 2TB is going for capacity tier).Totally 3 ESXi servers 6 TB-->cache tier and another 6 TB--->capacity Tier
In storage policy:- FTT is set as 1 and selected RAID 1 configuration.
Last week testing scenario is as follows:-
* Removed 2 TB(cache disk) from first ESXi server and inserted 1 TB cache disk(non-uniform configuration).After inserting non-uniform 1 TB SSD disk and DG configuration,we saw the object sync was in progress,however the 1 TB disk shown as unhealth.
we dont know what happened to that 1 TB SSD disk(new cache disk).Soon after,the VCSA appliance stopped responding.While taking 1st ESXi reboot,all the VMs running shown as invalid.
* While checking the vm status(get all vms) from cli,i shown as skipping.

We dont know what was the cause behind this and soon after all the VMs went invalid/inaccessible(after ESXi reboot).This is due to non-uniform configuration of cache disk or not ? Im not pretty sure.

After this issue,we have built a new VSAN setup freshly and like to test again with same 7 test VMs.FTT-1 and RAID 1 storage policy(3 ESXi servers only).
1) Remove one cache SSD disk from first ESXi host and will try to see the impact.By default,we have enabled dedupe and compression.I like to know what will happen if we remove any SSD disk(either cache or capacity from first ESXi server)?
I guess there should not be any impact to all the running virtual machines. Am i correct ? If i use de-duplication and compression on 3 node on all flash cluster,will there be any impact?

my java plugin use 3rd party jars
My java plugin can use 3rd party jars that is not OSGI bundle packages.file:///D:/study/vsphere-web-client-sdk-6.7.0-10244866/flex-client-sdk/docs/FAQ.html#using-bundlor
I tried to "inline"(or nest) the library insede my plugin bundle:
- Add this to your MANIFEST.MF
Bundle-ClassPath: .,myOtherLib.jar
- Include myOtherLib.jar at the root level of your plugin jar. It will be searched by the class loader along with the other classes from your plugin.
- If you generate the manifest with bundlor you may need to add a list of packages in Excluded-Imports: and Excluded-Exports: to be sure your plugin bundle doesn't export or import things that will interfere.
but that also did'nt worked got errors as:
Error retrieving deployment data for the plugin package at /etc/vmware/vsphere-client/vc-packages/vsphere-client-serenity/com.emc.asd.powerpath.licenseappliance-2.3.0 java.io.IOException: The bundle at /etc/vmware/vsphere-client/vc-packages/vsphere-client-serenity/plugins/jaxws-rt.jar should have Bundle-SymbolicName and Bundle-Versionheaders in its MANIFEST.MF

Hi,
I have VMWare 15.0.2 build-10952284 and am enquiring about the trusted platform module support.
I am trying to find out what this mean that I can use it to test BitLocker in a Windows 10 Guest.
I assume I don't need to have a TPM chip on my host?

vSphere Licensing Different Versions

One of my customer had queries about vSphere licensing different versions as stated below:
- Can we have cluster with one host licensed with vSphere Enterprise and second node with vSphere Standard?
- Can vSphere Enterprise license be downgraded to Standard?
- Is it still possible to downgrade new license Standard key to version 5?

USB devices no longer recognised on VMWare Fusion 10
Using previous version of VMWare Fusion, whenever I plugged-in a USB device it asked me where to attach it (the OS X main machine, or the VM).
With version 10, this is no longer happening.
Has anyone else seen this? Is there anything I can do to attach the devices?
I need to access USB drives.

Re-Configure vSphere Replication from VMFS5 to VMFS6

I have a query regarding the "Re-configure" option in vSphere Replication 6.5.1.Environment is as below and vSphere Replication and Array based replication is working fine between Primary and Secondary Sites.
Primary Site:
ESXi 5.5 U3
vCenter Server 6.5
vSphere Replication 6.5.1
SRM Server 6.5.1
Recovery Site:
ESXi 5.5 U3
vCenter Server 6.5

As part of the upgradation process, I am upgrading Secondary site Hypervisor to ESXi 6.5 U2 as per the compaitability matrix.
When I am reconfiguring the vSphere Replication datastores from existing VMFS5 to VMFS6, replication re-direction of datastores to VMFS6 is not happening.Error is as below
What i want to know is as below
1. Is it supported that i can re-direct from a VMFS5 to VMFS6 datastore in vSphere Replication? If Yes How ?
2. I searched across many links for limitations of vSphere Replication, but couldn't get any link which states about this ?
3. I can stop the replication and trigger a new replication directly to VMFS6 datastore which is working, but it will have a disadvantage that my existing hbr files on VMFS5 cannot be carried forward?

Migrate vmk0 from stamdard switch to distributed switch
I just migrated 4 hosts from 5.5 to 6.0U3 and three worked fine, the last one HOST05, upgraded but I lost the network connections. I thus re-installed the V6.0U3 OS from an ISO and am in the middle of setting it back up for the cluster and found the following, strange setup:
All existing hosts have the vmk0, the Management kernel on VLAN036, on the DV switch. They have a secondary management IP allocated as vmk2 on VLAN037 on the standard switch.
My new host HOST05 has the vmk0 (VLAN036) on the local switch and the vmk5 (secondary Management IP) on VLAN037 on the same standard switch.
My question is, how do I move vmk0 from the standard switch to the DV switch?
I tried to migrate vmk0 from the standard switch to the DV switch using:
- Select DV switch.
- Manage Virtual Adapters.
- Add.
- Migrate existing virtual adapters.
- Select "Management Network" (which is vmk0), change destination port group to port group with VLAN036 on DV switch.
- Finish
Error:
Call "HostNetworkSystem.UpdateNetworkConfig" for object "networkSystem-973651" on vCenter Server "MyvCenterServer.mydomain.local" failed.
Network configuration change disconnected the host 'HOST05.mydomain.local' from vCenter server and has been rolled back.

I tried the same from the web client with the same result.
So it looks like it won't migrate the vm kernel due to the loss of comms between the vCenter server and host. So how do I do this?
I tried launching the thick client and attaching directly to the host and using the above method, but when it comes to choosing the destination port group to attach the vmk0 kernel to, I get nothing in the drop-down.

[PARTIALLY] Bug? Weird issue when adding then removing a virtual drive
Greetings - here's my first post....
Two reasons for posting:
1- Find out if I should file a bug report
2- Share the solution that worked for me
I'll try to be as brief as possible in explaining this, but it was one of those white-knuckle situations so I'm probably fuzzy on some details.
Let me first make it perfectly clear that I did NOT create a snapshot at any point during this or at any point in the past - there is ONE snapshot in existence for this VM, not created in a timeframe that would have interfered with this event.
Basically, I needed to give a VM more disk space, but our entire system is low on space so I don't have enough "scratch" storage to be cloning things for short-term backup, plus actually taking a snapshot would have made this even worse (however that does somehow come into play later). While looking at the files associated with the VM, I noticed a 2nd large, apparently unused virtual disk in its folder. I wanted to try to mount that to see what it was and if I could delete it, so I added it to the VM as a secondary drive, and tried to boot. It failed saying "File system specific implementation LookupAndOpen[file] failed". No big deal, right? Obviously something is wrong with that file or whatever, and that's probably why it was unused in the first place. Therefore, I'll just remove it from the VM and it will be like nothing ever happened, right? WRONG. Upon trying to remove it, I got "Cannot remove virtual disk from the virtual machine because it or one of its parent disks is part of a snapshot of the virtual machine."...WTF!? So now I have a non-booting machine because this stupid drive i JUST added wont go back away....I mean, at no point had I taken any snapshots.
[SOLUTION] So now what? I Googled my butt off for a while to no avail. However, lucky me, I remembered having a very similar issue just a couple hours earlier with another VM I was trying to TAKE space from to give to this one (Robin Hood style). I had to move the drive to a different virtual SCSI port, save my changes, then it would let me remove it just fine. It worked again and with that drive removed, I was able to boot normally *WHEW*.
So unless someone can give me a rational explanation as to why the drive I added (again: without having actually taken any snapshots) suddenly threw ANY snapshot-related error, let alone one that would indicate it was part of one, I think this is a major bug. There is only one snapshot of this VM in existence, and that one appears to have been created by VMWare autoupdate a few days prior, and the weird (apparently)abandon virtual drive I tried to load was from a year before that, so no way that automated snapshot would have included any reference to it.
Hopefully that all makes sense. Myself, and my colleague just recently took over the entire IT department from our previous manager, who did not make documentation any sort of priority, so there are a lot of unknowns. But at least now I can tell the story of that time I nearly lost my company's entire accounting database doing something that seemed like it should have been entirely harmless and routine....Sure beats the story of the time I accidentally typed "rm -rf ." as root from the root partition on my personal machine...,

Error on vRA endpoint under Usage meter
Hi,
I have been working on vCloud Usage Meter and have added my vCenter, NSX Manager, vROps and vRA to it. I am facing issues with my vRA endpoint. The product was added successfully but throws up the below error under monitor tab.
Product: vRealize Automation, Hostname: b6-iaas7.cloud.ucs, Message: One edition was expected. Found: vac.vrealizeSuiteEnterprise.credit, codestream.standard.cpuPackage, vac.enterprise.serverVm
Usage meter version: 3.6.1 Build 7359407
vRA version: 7.3.1 (build 8004226)
Please let me know what is causing this issue and how to resolve it.
