Hello.

How can I hardening an ESXi 6.7 host? If the host is using for hosting websites then how can I secure it?

Thank you.

ESXI 6.7 -> 6.7 Network connectivity error

0

Last night I updated the first of three servers, and I planned to do the rest today. For now, I have stopped the process. The server upgraded fine without issues from 6.5 to 6.7 but after I did my first migration of a VM I got an error (Network connectivity lost). The alert email I get is as follows.

[VMware vCenter - Alarm alarm.NetworkConnectivityLostAlarm] Network connectivity restored on virtual switch "vSwitch3", portgroups: "GUEST-OS". Physical NIC vmnic2 is up.

Target: 192.168.2.51

Previous Status: Green

New Status: Red

Alarm Definition:

([Event alarm expression: Lost Network Connectivity; Status = Red] OR [Event alarm expression: Restored network connectivity to portgroups; Status = Red] OR [Event alarm expression: Lost Network Connectivity to DVPorts; Status = Red] OR [Event alarm expression: Restored Network Connectivity to DVPorts; Status = Red])

Event details:

Network connectivity restored on virtual switch "vSwitch3", portgroups: "GUEST-OS". Physical NIC vmnic2 is up.

vmnic2, vmnic3, and vmnic4 are part of my vSwitch3 group.  I can reset the error back to green and it won't come back until I do another migrate or last night when Veeam was backing up, Snapshots also seem to trigger this error.. I am not losing connectivity as the VM is running just fine. I put in a support request last night and haven’t heard back from VMWare yet, and I am at a loss. I am leaving the other two servers still on 6.5. Anyone have any thoughts? I am really lost here. Everything was fine until I went to 6.7.

ESXI 6.5 - Need help

I have a free esxi 6.5 that I am evaluating for three months now. I am receiving several warning logs for vmotion, FT, and others. Unfortunately, I do not have vcenter even vsphere client. Would there be a way to disable this? I did not configure this to be enabled.

Thank you

Mouse pointer jumping to the upper left corner (VMware Tools issue?)

0
0

I am not sure this is the right forum for my question.

After converting (P2V) some Windows servers I see the VM work for a short time (hours).

With no apparent reason I lose the control of the mouse, and the pointer jumps to the upper left corner of the screen.

I can move it around the screen but when I click the mouse the pointer jumps again to the upper left corner.

I can perform limited actions only using the old keyboard based functions.

I suspect the problem is related to VMware Tools, but reinstalling them does not solve the problem.
Have anybody faced similar problems?

Is there any document about thist strange behavior?

Regards

marius

Switched from Parallels to VMWare, but Autodesk inventor is super slow

I've been using Parallels for 10 years, but trying to switch over due to their crazy subscription model.

I've been using parallels for Autodesk inventor, and it is close to native speed. But on VMWare is it too slow to use. and the vmware-vmx process sucks 44% with inventor open and no activity (windows task manager shows 2%)

I've got plenty of RAM, CPU allocated. 3D acceleration is on.

OVA Size Discrepency

0
0

I have several OVAs that I built and they all are exporting as larger OVAs than the total storage the take up (details below). I initially exported them with multiple snapshots, and when I deleted those I thought that would definitely clear things up. Nope. Same export size. Some of them are running in ESXi 6.7 while others are running in 6.5 U2, if that matters. I'm using the OVF Tool to export them as the GUI absolutely never works properly.

For example:

VM1: 5.61GB vmdk file, 8.52GB exported OVA

VM2: 4GB vmdk  file, 7.96GB exported OVA

VM3: 4.01GB vmdk file, 8.12GB exported OVA

In each case, I'm getting the vmdk file size from the datastore browser, and there is only one file in any of them over 1MB and it is the vmdk I listed above. I don't expect the final file to have a little bloat, but not several gigabytes worth.

vCloud Director metadata entry type?

0
0

I've been scratching my head over this one for a bit trying to get vRealize Orchestrator to properly get/set/update vCD metadata against a vApp/VM. How do I determine the type of metadata value? All of the examples I can see rely on the 'old' vCD API where the only valid metadata type was 'String'.

With 'testVm' set to a VM object correctly I can use the following to see all the 'String' metadata keys and values:

var metadata = testVm.getMetadata();

var metadataEntries = metadata.getTypedEntries().enumerate();

for each (var metadataEntry in metadataEntries) {

     var value = metadataEntry.typedValue.getValue(new VclMetadataStringValue).value;

     System.log("Metadata key: " + metadataEntry.key + " value: " + value);

}

This code works fine for metadata where the data type is 'String' (since using VclMetadataStringValue), but doesn't retrieve any keys/values from metadata fields using the other 3 data types (boolean, date/time or number). What expression can I use to determine the type of the metadataEntry so I can handle it appropriately?

Thanks in advance, Jon.

Keep window sticky

0

Is there a way in VMWare fusion to keep the window sticky o the same area it was when you closed it?

When window popups to boot OS, the window shifts down. and i always find myself needing to re-adjust the position.

Similarly, when exiting full-screen the window does not always resize back to single window (smallish) or last windows size position... When returning from full screen, it often is just windowed but filling the entire screen  Only leaving menu bar and dock visible on OS X.

Anyway to fix.

Workstation 15.0.2 installation failure (Win 7 host): "Rolling back action" after failing to generate SSL keys, AND 'error code 1603'

0

Hello ... I'm running Workstation 15.0.2 installer. Progress bar on installer GUI runs normally up to a point where it freezes, and a smallish dialog box with NO TEXT superimposes on it: it shows just an 'exclamation' icon and an 'OK' button.

Upon clicking the button, the installer GUI briefly shows "Rolling back action" and proceeds to UNDO whatever it had done.

After going thru this routine several times, I managed to determine the spots in the logs which corresponded to the raising of the dialog box and to my clicking on the OK button. Got the following:

Action ended 17:04:34: InstallFinalize. Return value 3.

After these specific log lines, what appears in both logs is just the installer doing its "Rolling back" thing.

I did quite a bit of Googling on various keywords which I found relevant in the log - but didn't manage to dig up anything particularly relevant. The closest hit was this  VMware KB - Installing VMware Workstation fails to generate SSL keys . It's from 2009 and prompted me to hunt for an extraneousopenssl.exe file somewhere else in my system - which I didn't find, either thru Windows Search or thru manually browsing each pathname within the PATH environment variable.

Regarding error code 1603 , all I could find were various situations in various non-VmWare software products, and mostly as an indicator of some OTHER type of underlying issue. No hint of anything specifically worth of pursuing.

I can't think right now at any other thing I might investigate, and would highly appreciate whatever kind of pointers some kind soul would like to offer !

Cheers

vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -- The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

I am trying to convert an expandable disk to a pre-allocated one. Not split into many files, but one big file.

I rebooted, but I still get the error message in the title. This is the command I am running in cmd.exe

vmware-vdiskmanager.exe C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation>vmware-vdiskmanager.exe -r "C:\Users\ME\Virtual Machines\Win10\Win10-disk1.vmdk" -t 2 C:\Users\ME\Virtual Machines\Win10\Win10-pre-allocated-disk1.vmdk"

I tried copying the existing vmdk file to a different partition, and running the command with the new path, but I got the same error.

When I tried running the command in terminal of Ubuntu, I got the error message that the file is not found. But that might be because Windows locked the file as read-only. I have the problem sometimes, because of dual-boot. In Windows, I chose "restart", which is supposed to not use fast boot, but sometimes I still get the read-only error on my NTFS partitions...

Dedicating vCPU cores

0
0

Hello Experts,

Need an advice on to how to dedicate the CPU cores to a VM. Actually, my requirement is something like this :

I am having - ESXI hosts with 2 sockets * 18 cores = 36 cores in total ( assuming will not enable hyperthreading ) ( Intel processor with 2.6 GHz)

Now would like to deploy 2 types of VM :

1_ 1 Virtual Machines of 24 core (it is must to have 1:1 cpu core ratio meaning no oversubscription is allowed)

2_2 Virtual Machine of 10 cores each  (  can have 2:1 cpu core oversubscription for these VMs )

Now, the total cores I have on ESXI hosts is 36 and therefore this is how I am planning :

36 cores = 24 cores ( from 1 VM with 1:1 cpu core ratio ) + 10 cores ( from 2 VM where 2:1 cpu core oversubscription is possible ) + 2 cores for running ESXI 6.5 host.

Experts could you please guide me if this is the right plan and division of cores . If this is the right planning could you please guide me how will ensure that 1 VM will get 24 cpu cores exactly.
