PIV Card Reader Support WS12

I cannot get Workstation 12 to see my USB PIV card readers in the Win7 virtual machine. They do not even show up as an option under removable devices. I have tried both Centos 6.7 and 7 as the host OS,with different readers, same problem. CentOS sees the readers just fine. WS10 works fine.

PIV Cards are needed for login and other account verification needs. I have tried some of the solutions suggested elsewhere with no luck. For now my best option may be to stick with WS10 if I don't find a fix shortly.

Thanks,

Doug

Hey all,

I got a snapshot setup to be created automatically within the vcenter once a month and need a script to remove the snapshot 4 days later. I am testing this script on just one snap to start but will need to expand it.  Also at the end I wanted it to email me just to confirm things were done.

Trying to configure vRA7 lab instance with our OpenLDAP directory.  Although the test button succeeds, I can't seem to get a sync to work.  Is OpenLDAP even supported in vRA7 and is there documentation that explains how to set it up?  My Google powers have turned up nothing yet unfortunately.

Hi All,

I am having the error for a vCenter that I have added in the Business Management.

Error:

The server's hostname does not match the one found in its certificate.

Unable to complete inventory synchronization.

Solution:

Try adding the server using the hostname present in its certificate or rectify the certificate to contain the correct hotname, edit the connection and view and accept the new certificate.

Check the inventory service.

This is a vCenter Appliance 5.5.

I have another vCenter (Windows) 6.0 and this is working fine.

Appreciate any help or ideas.

Thanks.

I am running windows 10 on a laptop. I have Qualcomm Atheros AR956x Wireless Network Adapter. Laptop: ASUS X550ZE. Please help.

Office 2013 to 2016 App Migration

We are looking to use UEM's App Migration feature to assist in our migration from Office 2013 to Office 2016. We have recently upgraded from UEM 8.6 to 9.0, and we are capturing the standard Office settings with no customization. With the UEM install, a template migration XML (Application Migration Office 2007 to Office 2010) is included and seems pretty straight forward. The only question I have is, do I need to list out the <filesystem> locations (AppData & LocalAppData) in the migration XML if there is not a version specified in the path? Example being, if Word 2013 saves personal application settings in "<AppData>\Microsoft\Word", do I need to specify a source location and a destination location even though they are the same location?

I know the question seems like it has an easy answer, but the reason I ask is because I'm not seeing in the UEM 8.6\8.7\9.0 Admin Guides where personal application settings locations like "<AppData>\Microsoft\Word" will be automatically copied over without the need to add file system source and destination locations to the XML. I will test out by not adding these source and destination locations to the XML and only include the registry section, and will let everyone know how my testing goes. But if anyone has already tried this and can provide some input, let me know.

vROPS 6.2.1.3774215 - Storage Devices Solution Collection Status "Object Down"

Hi all,

Issue: vROPS 6.2.1.3774215 - Storage Devices Solution Collection Status "Object Down"

vCenters are on 6.0 u2.

vROPS 6.2.1.3774215 - Fresh deployment of Linux Appliance and there is a Master and Master Replica node.

The "VMWare vSphere" adapter is collecting and receiving data successfully.

I had configured the "Management Pack for Storage Devices" with working domain credentials that have the Administrator role in all my vCenters.

The "Collection State" is "Collecting" but the "Collection Status" is "Object down".

I have stopped the cluster and also restarted it using the standard sequence and this also did not change anything.

Does anyone know what the status means? Noting on Google that i am aware of.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks!vROPS_Object_Down.PNG

vCenter / vRops - Sharing my scripts

Hello Everyone,

I use vRops Suite-API and PowerCLI for vCenter to get data out for my day to day... sometimes I found a wealth of information on the interwebs and sometimes I couldn't find info at all..

So I started a blog last week to share the stuff that I am doing with vRops and vCenter specifically in the Capacity and Performance space....if you are interested feel free to check out my blog http://vman.ch/

Some of the scripts / examples I already have are:

vRops – suite-api – createCustomGroup

vRops – suite-api – addProperties

vRops – suite-api – createReport & downloadReport

For anyone which has ever tried to consume metric data via the Suite-API.... they know how painful it can be! one of the key script I built and which I keep building functionality into pulls multiple metrics, for multiple objects, transforms the data and push it into an XLS, it then builds in the Pivot + it generates a second tab in the XLS with information relating to the host, vm, datastore etc...  This is something i use on a daily basis to provide data to customers (I will be this one will be coming soon)... something which I started with here: Help using Suite-API - getStatsOfResourcesCSV with Powershell Invoke-RestMethod

For vCenter I will also be sharing a powershell script I built to collect Inventory, relationship and metric data... this includes real time data collection using multiple jobs to collect simultaneously (also coming soon)

Cheers

Solaris 10 VM Converted goes into a Boot Loop

$

We have a set of images sent to us by a customer. Not sure of the software used to create the images.

The images were taken from various physical servers with various operating systems (Linux, Solaris, Windows).

We used StarWinds free converter to convert the images to vmdk files.

Using VMware Workstation, we are able to create a VM and add the converted vmdk as the system disk.

We then used VMware converter  to covert the VMs and move them over to ESXi Server 6.0.

We are able to boot a majority of the Linux VMs (RHEL 6).

However,  Solaris boots up and goes into a boot loop...

Is there a mod required to stop the looping?

Thanks

Rest call to update 'Cores per socket' property of a VM

$

Team,

I am trying to automate the process of deploying VMs in Vcloud. One of the steps is to update VM properites(Memory,CPU etc.)

I am using a rest call to update Memory and CPU information. However, i am not able to update 'Cores per Socket' property using a rest call.

A very similar rest call is used in both cases but one property is updated and the other is not. what could be the reason? Is there any other way i could update the cores per socket property?

I would appreciate if anyone would help me in identifying the problem here.

Thanks,

Vinay.

How to trace files from vRO to vCenter

$

Kind of new to VMware so please bear with me.  I'm working with a vRO workflow developed by someone else.  It's very basic: copy executable file from vCO to guest VM and execute install command.  The problem is I don't know where the executable is being stored.  The configuration file says "/vrofiles/RSCD87-LIN64.rpm" but I can't trace where vrofiles is.  Can anyone provide some guidance?

vRA CloudClient issue: after reprovisioning a VM, the VM gets a new IP

$

Hi,

I am trying to reprovision a provisioned VM using the vRA CloudClient. Basically, reprovisioning works, but there is an annoying issue:

  • - After being reprovisioned a new IP is assigned to the VM instead of using the already allocated IP

e.g. original allocated IP: 192.168.153.2

new IP after reprovisioning: 192.168.153.10 (instead of .153.2)

I executed the following command inside the vRA CloudClient:

CloudClient>vra machines action execute --id 'machinename' --action  Reprovision

I reviewed the request in the vRA portal and found out that properties like

  • VirtualMachine.Network0.Address
  • VirtualMachine.Network0.AddressType
  • VirtualMachine.Network0.DnsSearchSuffixes
  • VirtualMachine.Network0.DnsSuffix
  • VirtualMachine.Network0.Gateway
  • VirtualMachine.Network0.NetworkProfileName
  • VirtualMachine.Network0.PrimaryDns
  • VirtualMachine.Network0.SecondaryDns

are missing.

What am I doing wrong?

Looking for the right Custom Properties for event VMPSMasterWorkflow32.EVENT.ReconfigureVM

$

I`m having problems finding the correct Custom properties fro the events VMPSMasterWorkflow32.EVENT.ReconfigureVM so that I get more information into vRO.

For the normal VM provisioning process the stuff was mapped by pretty good here: vRealize Automation 7 – Enabling the Event Broker » Extending Clouds see the spreadsheet. However I cant not figure out where to get that information. No vmware doc seams to have a list or some ideas

What i want to do is hook into the reconfigure Action. The reconfigure action triggers the following (vRA7.1) events:

  • VMPSMasterWorkflow32.EVENT.ReconfigureVM.Pending
  • VMPSMasterWorkflow32.EVENT.ReconfigureVM.Successful
  • VMPSMasterWorkflow32.EVENT.ReconfigureVM.Complete
  • VMPSMasterWorkflow32.EVENT.ReconfigureVM.Failed

But without the customer property I only get this information from the payload:

/lifecycleState/phase : EVENT

/lifecycleState/state : VMPSMasterWorkflow32.VMPSMasterWorkflow32

/lifecycleState/event : VMPSMasterWorkflow32.VMPSMasterWorkflow32.EVENT.ReconfigureVM.Complete

/componentId : vSphere_Machine_1

/blueprintName : test

/componentTypeId : Infrastructure.CatalogItem.Machine.Virtual.vSphere

What I need would be the the machine properties of the VM, such as:

/machine/properties/VirtualMachine.Memory.Size : 1024

/machine/properties/VirtualMachine.Cafe.Blueprint.Component.Cluster.Index : 0

/machine/properties/VirtualMachine.CPU.Count : 1

/machine/properties/__Clone_Type : CloneWorkflow

/machine/properties/__clonespec : Linux

/machine/properties/VirtualMachine.Admin.TotalDiskUsage : 5120

/machine/properties/VirtualMachine.Disk0.Label : Hard disk 1

Anyone?

PS: you can rad the properties pretty easy with the following vRO workflow:

function getSubproperties(subject,prop){    for each (subkey in prop.keys) {        subcontent=prop.get(subkey);        if ((typeof subcontent) == "object"){            getSubproperties((subject+"/"+subkey),subcontent);        } else {            System.log((subject+"/"+subkey) + " : " + subcontent);         }    }
}

for each (key in payload.keys) {
    content=payload.get(key);    if ((typeof content) == "object"){        getSubproperties(("/"+key),content);    } else {            System.log("/"+key + " : " + content);     }
}

How to Shrink a Windows 2012 R2 Server VM on Mac mini with Fusion Drive?

$

0

I have a Windows 2012 R2 Server virtual machine guest, running on a Mac mini that has an Apple fusion drive.

QUESTION: What is the procedure to shrink (compress) the .vmwarevm virtual machine file to its smallest possible size?

Once a week, I shutdown the virtual machine, copy it (and then restart it), compress the copy (using Finder's Compress), and then download the compressed file offsite. If I can shrink the virtual machine then the copy, compress, and download operations will take less time.

Here are some considerations that complicate the question for me:

* The virtual machine has two virtual drives. Here is more info:

C: 43 Gbytes used out of 80 Gbytes. This drive contains the Windows OS and applications. (SCSI. Not "split into multiple files")

D: 15 Gybes used out of 600 Gbytes. This drive contains the document database that is expected to grow over time. (SCSI. Split into multiple files).

* The virtual machine is running on a Mac mini with an Apple fusion drive. For some reason, Defrag cannot be run on this virtual machine:

In the "Optimize Drives" (formerly "defrag") control panel, Windows thinks that the Media type is "Solid state drive" and says that "Optimization not available." The "Last run" column says, "Never run."

This is my only Mac with an Apple fusion drive, so I wonder if VMware is telling Windows that the drive is solid state. The Windows virtual machines on my other Macs do not have this issue, but none of them is running Windows 2012 R2 Server. I have a little-used Windows 2008 R2 Server on an ordinary Mac host with a spinning disk.

* Normally I would cleanup the drives in Windows, run defrag, zero out the free space, and then run the shrink from the Mac command line (see below for the shrink command that I use). In this case, I have two concerns:

+ Zeroing out the free space on drive D: (600 Gbytes) might grow the physical file to 600 Gbytes and take an unreasonably long time.

+ Whether there is enough free space on the Mac's 1 Tbyte fusion drive to run the shrink command considering the large virtual size of the drive D:. Its "real" size is only 15 Gbytes.

* Here is the command I normally use to shrink:

/Applications/VMware\ Fusion.app/Contents/Library/vmware-vdiskmanager -k (append full path to .vmdk file in package after command)

What is the best way to compress this virtual machine after I run Windows cleanup (to delete unneeded recovery backups) and delete other unneeded files?

Any advice, suggestions, recommendations would be most appreciated.

CPU peaks on Horizon View enviroment

Hello community,

we are sometimes having cpu peaks in our VDI environment (6.2.2 with VMware persona enabled).

As example a user is printing pdf files from his mail client and the VM is getting slower and slower also the status of VM Tools sometimes is going into state Not Running.

The Linked Clone clients are all Win7 64Bit with 2vCPU and 3GB vRAM.

Maybe someone had a problem like this?

Thank you for some information here.

How do I stop/block/fail a VM provisioning from entering BuildingMachine event (while developing/testing)

$

We are using XaaS to request a VM blueprint to be built, with all our parameters and VM specs etc. So far we've worked mostly in vRA/vRO to build the surrounding mechanism, configuration elements, vRA Catalog Items etc, but not really sent the request to build machine. We are now starting to do so to start coding the IPAM/DNS/AD/CMDB/++ integrations and see what happens etc when a VM gets provisioned. For this we want to use the Event Subscriptions. So far so good..

Problem is we want to block/stop/fail the VM provisioning  before it hits the VMPSMasterWorkflow32.BuildingMachine event so it won't actually start to clone our template. This takes some time, and with lots of code testing and request firing off it would be bad to just let the machine get built when there are no IP addresses etc to give to the VM.

So does anyone know how to stop/kill/dispose/fail the provisioning process right before BuildingMachine?

We intend to do most of the 3rd party integration in VMPSMasterWorkflow32.Requested and .VMPSMasterWorkflow32.WaitingToBuild states, which is the states before .MPSMasterWorkflow32.BuildingMachine.

Horizon View Windows Mobile 10 client login problem

Hi,

I just installed the new Horizon View Windows Mobile 10 client (so happy to see this !!!), but unfortunately I can't login to our infrastructure.

We are using 2 factor authentication using a radius server. But when I configure our server address it automatically asks for RSA SecurID username and passcode.

How can I change the authentication method so I can use the 2-factor/Radius configuration?

Thank you in advance
