ESXi 6.0 PSoD issues (even with Express Patch 6)

So last weekend I encountered the infamous PSoD / Vmxnet3 issue on our 6.0u2 host:

PSOD_cropped.PNG

This occurred after a newly created hardware version 11 VM with a Vmxnet3 NIC was put into production. The PSoD backtrace was consistent with kb2144685 so I proceeded to install Express Patch 6 to fix the issue. It worked fine for a week so I assumed it was fixed...

Last night I woke up to another PSoD:

PSOD2_cropped.png

And then another shortly after booting up the "Veeam" VM again (this time with a E1000 NIC instead of Vmxnet3):

PSOD3_cropped.PNG

I exported the System Logs from vSphere client after both crashes last night, in the hopes that someone could help me figure out the cause. Unfortunately I just found out we only have a Subscription support contract with VMware so their phone support wouldn't help me. Perhaps someone here could?

P.S. All the other VM's on this host are hardware version 10 or older, as they were migrated from a ESXi 5.5.0 host. I've not once seen those VM's listed in a PSoD backtrace, only the new "Veeam" running hardware version 11. The host is back up and running sans said VM and so far so good. Pretty sure I'll be downgrading to 5.5.0 this weekend after all this

Edit: I've opened a support case with Dell ProSupport who have offered to have a VMware expert there take a look at the System logs. Will update here what they find.

Mac NVRAM corruption caused by VMWare Fusion

Hi,

I wanted to know if this was happening to anyone else or just me.

I frequently have issues with the NVRAM of the Mac host, that refuses to boot without a nvram reset via holding down key combination.

It took me a while to understand the cause, which I have now tracked down to not having completely suspended or shutdown a Fusion virtual machine prior to powering off, for example due to the battery running out.

I have only experienced this with Linux guests, as they are the only ones I use.

vmware : Professional Version 8.1.1 (3771013)

host : MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

Is this a known issue? I haven't found anything on the forum or via Google.

Thanks,

Changing the root password on an ESXi host joined to vCenter

I need to change the root password on an ESXi 5.5 host joined to vCenter. I know the current password and can do it using the local server console. However, do I understand it correctly that it doesn't influence its connection to vCenter in any way?

We have a monitoring system that would raise an alarm in case the host becomes unavailable or something like that. It would be good to avoid it.

no temperature shown in vSphere, ESXi6 on Dell T5500

Hello,

I installed Free hypervisor 6 on Dell Precision T5500 workstation.

It works wonderfully for what I need except for not showing temperatures under the "Configuration" tab in vSphere.

I've read that it is possible there are no CIM drivers available that interface with sensor information.

I also found that Dell offers their own version of hypervisor here which comes preloaded with Dell specific drivers. Whether this is a free or paid, I am not sure.

The only problem, the listed compatible Dell systems for that download are mostly servers which does not list my workstation.

Does that mean I am pretty much out of luck?

The reason I am so interested in seeing temperatures is because I've recently upgraded my processors(dual) and I have no way of telling what temperatures they are running. BIOS has no information and ESXi is no go either.

Any help is appreciated!

Cold Standby system as a recovery solution

NOTE - before reading, we are at vSPhere 5.5, not 5.1, but the option to add a post to a vSPhere 5.5 group doesn't exist, which I believe needs to be mitigated by the VMTN.   The options for where to post have changed for the worse over the years, I don't like this new model at all and I'm sure many would agree its unproductive and a pain in the ass.

OK, sorry about that rant...  here's my post:

I have the need to pull a small handful of management VMs "out of band."

For those familiar with the VCE vBlock, you recognize that VCE forces customers to purchase the AMP (advanced mgmt. pod) with every vBlock.  This is to keep mgmt. functions off the UCS chassis, off the EMC storage, off the fabric, and to some degree slightly out of the networking (although this is a bit more complicated to start thinking about).  So if there is an issue with any of the above mentioned components, admins can still easily access the mgmt servers to bring things back to life without stress or struggles.

I am currently proposing a mgmt cluster for my organization.

- thought about VSAN, not a good choice for a small cluster due to limitations with 2 and 3 node configurations, in fact, you can get yourself into trouble if you don't read the fine print with this solution.  If we had a need for 4 nodes this would be a nice option.

- thought about traditional 2 node cluster backed by low end NAS, iSCSI, just like the AMP in the vBlock which consists of 2 standalone c200s backed by VNXe appliance.  This is doable.

Finally, I thought, what if I just purchase 2 hosts with local disk?   build them both via a SD card, populate one of the 2 hosts with local disk and use the local disk as VMFS volume(s).

The question I ask is this - if the primary host were to fail, can I simply move the local disk into the spare standby server and power up the VMs?   I don't have the hardware handy to test this out since we are a blade shop..  so I'm asking if anyone has any thoughts on this low cost, poor mans cluster.   the only problem I can think of in this case is that when moving the disks into the spare host, you might need to resignature the VMFS volumes from the new host so it can access the datastores.  Not really sure, hence the reason I'm asking.

Thanks in advance.

Clones producing kernel: file table is full errors

I'm using Vagrant to create multiple VMs. This works by creating linked clones of a parent machine. Everything works fine with one and two machines created from the same parent, however as soon as I go to three clones from the same parent I get a load of errors in my system log:

13/09/2016 12:30:40.000 kernel[0]: vmmon: Cycles 75

13/09/2016 12:30:40.000 kernel[0]: file: table is full

13/09/2016 12:30:40.000 kernel[0]: file: table is full

13/09/2016 12:30:41.000 kernel[0]: file: table is full

:

:

13/09/2016 12:30:50.000 kernel[0]: file: table is full

13/09/2016 12:30:50.000 kernel[0]: file: table is full

13/09/2016 12:30:50.000 kernel[0]: vmmon: Cleaned up 893 user anonymous pages from VM.

13/09/2016 12:30:50.000 kernel[0]: file: table is full

13/09/2016 12:30:50.000 kernel[0]: file: table is full

The virtual machine exists but refuses to resume (meaning it is useless).

Starting other VMs (not cloned from this parent) works fine, so this is not a simple resource issue as I first suspected (I can easily run half a dozen or more VMs simultaneously under normal circumstance).

I have, of course, asked the Vagrant guys if they have any ideas, but since I can make this happen by simply trying to resume the VM directly through the Fusion library window I'm guessing it something to do with Fusion and as this is the only time I use clones (linked or otherwise) I'm suspecting this problem stems from that feature.

Any suggestions welcomed.

Seeing a NonPaged leak with pool tag VMHO which maps back to VMNetAdapter.sys

Running VMWare Workstation 12.1.1 (Build 3770994) on Server 2008 R2 SP1 (fully patched) and I have noticed that overall memory usage seems to climb while the machine runs normally.  I patched the host today so shut down all of my VMs and found that 15G of 60G total was still in use.  13G of that was attributed to NonPaged pool and PoolMon confirmed that tag vmho is the culprit.  I see some ~3.3M allocations of 2192 bytes each for 7.1G.  The next highest NonPaged consumer is LSbf for 51M so vmho is definitely the culprit.

The issue seems to have started with the 12.1.1 upgrade, as best I can recall.  The driver is version 4.2.3.0 (Build 2003952) dated 4/14/2016.  I run with 9 host only NICs where RRAS on the host routes between them.  NAT and DHCP are all disabled in the VMNet configuration.  I cannot find anything online indicating that anyone else is hit or reporting this.  I tried to disable the NICs, to see if doing so would free up the memory, but only the first one disabled and the rest seemed to ignore the request entirely.  I then tried to re-enable the first NIC and it is hung with the Enabling... dialog now.

Is VMWare aware of this issue?  A fix would be greatly appreciated.

VMRC problem to access VMs

Hi  everybody,

We installed vcenter (under windows 2012) in a VM (Vitual Machine) witch is managed by an esxi 5.5 installed in a dedicated computer.

After having installed symantec antivirus i am unable to access to the VMs from VMRC.

however i can still access to vcenter by web vsphere client or vsphere client.

The symantec antivirus block the communication with the service. So i decide to unstalled it, but it is impossible for me to access the system windows 2012 under the vcenter VM, the same error is retrurned : VMRC console has been deconnected. Because of the symantec antivirus. I can't either  access it from a RDP session.

What to do ? help  please !

sincerely

VMSA-2016-0010 and Fusion 7

The referenced advisory says that Fusion 8 is vulnerable, there is no mention of Fusion 7.  Is this because it was tested and proven not vulnerable, or because it was not tested at all due to Fusion 7's age?  I'm looking for reasons to justify an upgrade to the boss

Allow change password option and Global Catalog domain controllers

Question about changing expired passwords with Identity Manager. The documentation says: “The Allow Change Password option is not available for Active Directory environments that use a global catalog.”

Why is this? And if I have an environment with 2 DCs which are both GC, I cannot use this functionality? Can't you have gobal catalog servers at all in your environment? I think all of my customer environments uses Global catalog servers in their infrastructure...

View Agend Direct Connection 7.0.1 + Smartcard Auth

Hi all!

I'm fighting about a month against smartcard authentication...

I'm trying to access a virtual desktop using View Agent Direct Connection + smartcard, but there is a error between me and the happiness.

On horizon client (4.1.0) I've created a New Server using the virtual desktop IP. So, after that, double click on virtual desktop icon and the client asked for smartcard. So, I've inserted the smartcard and the next step asked me the PIN! So far worked like a charm.

But, always there is a "but", the next screen was an error: Error: HTTP error 403, as follow attached.

Firewall on virtual desktop is off. HTTPS 443 is listening on virtual desktop.

Any ideias?

Thanks.

Best,

Eduardo.

Change vRealize Automation status message when calling vCO workflow

Hi,

is it possible to change the vRealize Automation Status Details message when a vCO workflow that is called via vRA advanced services ends successfully?

I would like to include some vCO output parameters to vRA instead of just "Status Details = The request was successfully completed" (print screen 01.png)

If defining your error code it gets included in the Status Details when the WF fails (print screen 02.png)

thanks

Teradici Zero (Dell P25) USB Printer Issues

I am experiencing an issue where print jobs submitted on Horizon View Windows 7 SP1 virtual desktops to USB connected printers fail part of the way through the print job.  For instance, 15 pages of a 25 page PDF document may print before showing an error in Windows.  The USB printers are two different HP models.  The endpoints are Dell P25's.  We have tested the P25s with all firmware versions from 4.5 through 5.0.2 and the issue persists.  The Horizon View Agents we have tried are 6.1.1 and 6.2.2 (ThinPrint components disabled - USB redirection only).

The only entry of possible relevance we have seen on the P25 logs (with USB enhanced logging enabled) is:

[meta sequenceId="24794"]2016-03-08T17:21:01.90Z RC:0 URBOIP:process_request_cancel Calling transfer abort for URB req 0x3a8

(the time stamp on this log entry does not match the Agent log entries below because they are not from the same error instance)

We only started experiencing this issue after we swapped out Windows ThinPC repurposed PC endpoints with the P25s.

We do see the following in the VMWare View Agent logs on the virtual desktops:

Re: vCenter 6 and smart card authentication / not prompting for certificate (web client)

I am searching for the same answer.  I am stuck with the error, "Make sure the smart card is inserted properly.  Close your browser window then retry."

WebClientInsertedProperlyRedact.png

I have done the same steps as the Original Poster except that I have not replaced my SSL and user certificates with trusted ones.  I therefore get untrusted certificate warnings before I log in.

I did do the following two steps in order to progress my issue slightly:

- Added my vCenter Server FQDN to the Local Internet sites and Trusted Sites (through Group Policy).

- Installed the Client Integration Plugin

I can log in with Smart Card authentication if I select "Use Windows Session Authentication."  However, I have multiple certificates and do not want to use my Windows session certificate to administer the vCenter Server.   The vSphere Web Client does not prompt me for certificates, so I cannot switch to my other certificate.  Likewise, I do not want to login to Windows and/or open Internet Explorer with my Administrator certificate.  These are not security best business practices; and boy does my organization like their best business practices.

Smart Card certificates work fine for all other websites and applications.

Persistent Disk Management, View 5.2

We have an environment with over 500 desktops using persistent disks. These disks are 2gb in size and we regularly get calls about them getting full. Users always wait until it's full to the brim and causing them issues before alerting us, often times not even allowing a level 1 tech to remote in to assist it's so bad/full. I've already deployed scripts that run on log on to clear out temporary internet files and other temp files. However, we still get these issues because of programs like DropBox, Google Chrome, Google Drive, Snag-it, miss-configured outlook OST files, and several other apps that can grow over time.

I've been trying to find some sort of method of monitoring these disks, whether it be somewhere we can go look and sort the desktops by most used space, or just be alerted when a users persistent disk reaches say 90% full. I just to do preventative maintenance to avoid frustrations for our users and help desk. And if there are other ideas, or forum posts I was not able to find, I'd love to see them too.

Thanks for any input you guys can provide!

Upgrade usage meter 3.3.1

Is it possible to upgrade Usage Meter 3.3.1 directly to 3.3.3?  I can't find any good documentation on how to upgrade 3.3.1 to 3.3.2, and there isn't an upgrade.zip for 3.3.2, only 3.3.3

Save base64 encoded File Attachment from a SOAP service, as the original file

Hi all

I am doing som work with Thycotic's Secret Server product, for a customer.

Among other things, they are using Secret Server, to store certificate's in p12 format, as attachments to "Secrets" inside Secret Server.

Secret Server have a SOAP API (and a not full feature REST API).

The SOAP API can deliver the attachments, as base64 encode strings.

I have a base64 javascript encoder/decoder action, which seems to work.

I have so far tested it with a simple TXT attachment in the Secret Server, and are able to convert those back to clear text.

Now the question:

What is the best way to decode a base64 encode file attachment, delivered as a string, back to it's originally file format, and save that to a vRO local file?

(the certificate is to be transferred from vRO into vRA deployed VMs and be installed there)

Hope somebody can give me some pointers, so I don't have to figure this out completely by my self :-)

Forward all critical alerts from Log Insight to vROPs

Hi,

I want to forward all critical alerts from Log Insight to vROPs. To do so, in Log Insight I go to Interactive Analysis --> Alerts --> Manage Alerts --> Select ALL Alerts --> Enable --> Check the option to "Send to vRealize Operations Manager".

Here I have to specify "Fallback Object". What is a fallback object? Does that refer to the vROPs node to forward the alerts?

The objective here is to forward all critical alerts from ESXi hosts, vCenter servers and all other objects( forwarding logs to Log Insight) to vROPs.

Please suggest.

Thanks,

vSAN GUI Object MGT?

$

Just starting to learn VSAN.  Starting with fresh vSAN 6.2.  Learning with Nested Cluster on a single PE T610 backed by local disks.  Just playing with two node + witness.  Nested VSAN hosts have Disk groups backed by separate RAID1s on T610.  Fake SSD vdisk+ 4 15GB vdisks.  2 vsan vmk/subnets.

Playing with it for few days and everything seemed to be working.  Though...very poor performance.  It is all meant for learning so wasn't concerned.  This morning playing with performance stress test and it failed.  And did some damage  Vsan health check then informed about 32 inaccessible objects.

So began learning the procedure for vsan object management.  Nightmare.  After several hours learning objtool + RVC I am amazed how crazy this is to not have a GUI for object management + tools to purge objects in bulk.  Only found mass purge for vswap.

For fun I ran stress test again...inaccessible objects doubled again...vsan overhead on capacity keeps growing.  I'm sure the Nested environment is causing this issue but it really has me wondering about management of vSAN in large environment....

It cannot be that Vmware wants each UUID manually entered to delete these objects.  Jumping between ESXI host console objtool + Ruby console?  All CLI?  No centralized GUI?

Does Vmware have intention of putting more attention on vSAN object management?  I hope it's not here is because its being developed for HTML5 web client.

P.S.  If you know why stress test is failing and leaving all these inaccessible objects please share

Thanks.  TTFN.
