Multiple distributed switches or multiples LAGs? - Best practice please?

Hi All,  I'm in the process of upgrading from standard to distributed switches on an ESXi 5.5 cluster.  I notice on 5.5 that multiple LAGs (Link Aggregation Groups) are now supported - this has thrown a spanner in the works!

 

Traditionally as part of best practices I have always separated management traffic, vMotion and VM traffic into three separate standard switches with two physical uplink NICs each (I don't use FT or ISCSI). I was intending on replicating this when migrating to distributed switches and having three switches, however I notice that some people are now using one distributed switch with the uplinks divided into three LAGs which then send the relevant traffic to the relevant VMKernel or VM portgroups in that switch.  Are there any advantages/disadvantages to either method and is one best practice over the other?

We are unable to execute the rescan from PowerCLI command Promt,

$esxcli=Get-EsxCLI -VMHost <HostName>

$esxcli.storage.core.adapter.rescan(--all,-F,-T,delete)

 

But we are getting the errors.

 

If any one knows about tis issue ,Plz help me

Valid through dissapeared from the Transcript?

I was trying to find the exact expiration date on my VCP Certs but "Valid through" seem to have disappeared from the transcript.

 

By now I know it was/is March 10th 2015, but does anyone know why they have disappeared within the Transcript? ("Valid through" use to be between the "Certified as" and "Candidate ID").

Only allowing replication at certain times

Hi all..... Ive just setup replication between our two offices.

 

I kind of understand this RPO business, and have set our VMs to 24hr for now, as our DMS servers have problems if replication kicks off during business hours.

 

 

I have noticed the DMS servers are having these replication issues during the day. My question is; Is there a way to specify a time or window for replication to run. It only takes around 30 mins to run. But it seems to 'do things' whenever it wants....

 

or even specify a time when replication cant run?

Alert only when issue is detected?

Hi all,

 

I feel like I am missing something very basic when it comes to configuring email alerts for Log Insight 2.0.

 

I configure an alert, and would expect it to only ever email me if it comes across a log entry to trigger it. However I am finding that I am getting spammed constantly with messages from the alert stating that "0 new events found for alert", which strikes me as a bit unnecessary, alerts that run every 15 minutes can get very painful!

 

I've poked around the GUI and trawled through these forums along with reading the Log Insight doco and I can't seem to find a way to tell Log Insight to only email me if it finds an actual problem. I'm sure it is possible, I must just be blind!

Summary of the request

Hey vCac Community,

 

Is it possible to have a summary page at the end of the request to a service Blueprint ( Created via the designer)? If yes, how can I do it please?

This Summary page summarizes all the informations gived by the user and asked him to confirm his request.

PowerCli 5.5 Release 1 snapshots

Default Permission in vCenter

Hello all,

 

How I can change the Default-Permission for all users which have no specific role from "No Access" to "Read Only" ?

 

I'm working since some weeks with a colleague in ESXi 5.5 as an admin.

Up to now we had no trainings about this. So sorry if I use wrong items here.

 

We want to use the virtual hosts in VMware to test our software. This means the VMware environment does not needto be high secure.

 

To login in vCenter we use OpenLDAP.

 

For dedicated User which sould have the rights to create a new virtual host we defined a role.

But all other user see nothing. If I understand the docu right all user's which are defined in a role have "No Access".

To keep the configuration in VMware simple we want to give all this user's "Read Only" access.

 

Any hints for me ?

Why are some (old) games jerking, (some) new games not?

I use VMWare Player with Windows XP to play old games. I have installed a lot of games, but many old games are jerking and are unplayable. For Example Command & Conquer 1 (The Ultimate Edition Version) or Project IGI. Other games like Far Cry 2 or Project IGI 2 running with high graphics details very fine. I dont understand this.I want to test some more games. If some newer games are unplayable it´s locical, because WMWare Player is only a guest-system, but old games dont need much power and some new games which need more power are very good playable.

 

My System: (Host):

Windows 7 (x64)

AMD Athlon X6, 2,7 Ghz

12 GB DDR3 Ram

AMD Radeon R9 280X

 

Guest System:

3D activated

4 GB Ram

Get vApp name from UUID

Hello,

I am trying to resolve some of the contents of an AMQP message we receive for a failure event. The names of some events are more helpful than the UUID. In particular, I'm looking to retrieve the vApp name (among other data) using the uuid provided. Here is a sample of the xml that is generated from the AMQP message:

I currently have some code in vCO that can extract the UUIDs. However, I cannot seem to figure out how to query VCloud for the object properties using the UUIDs.

 

Any examples on how to do this is greatly appreciated.

SRM installation privileges

I have to install for a client of mine SRM 5.1 but I have not all administrator rights on the vcenter.

For reasons of security can not authorize me all the permits, you know what I'd have to activate to install and manage SRM?

Hi,

 

When I want to convert a phisical machine to a virtual I see this error :

 

An error occured while opening a virtual disk. Verify that the Converter server and the running source machines have a network access to the source and destination ESX/ESXi hosts.

 

I uploded de log.

Не удаляется файлы виртуальной машины

При удалении каталога  на датасторе появляется ошибка error caused by file и удалить ничего не получается помогите разобраться в чем  проблема
через SSH тоже не получается удалить

Start a new virtual machine failed by virtual flash read cache?

- I got this error when trying start a new virtual machine in a cluster:

     "the available virtual flash resource ('0' bytes) is not sufficient for the requested operation ('10737418240' byte"

- I have started 20 virtual machines with flash read cache normally a few day ago and free 92GB capacity for virtual flash read cache per host. Now I create a new virtual machine and can not start by above error.

- I had google search for this error but don't have any answer.

Free ESXi 5.0 to Essentials 5.5 best practice

Good day.

 

We are currently running the free version of VMware ESXi 5.0.  We wish to move to ESXi210 5.5 so we can install a second CPU and more memory.  At the same time we would like to install the Essentials Kit.  I am a bit confused as to the order in which we should proceed.  

 

My plan so far is:

1. Upgrade to Free ESXi 5.5

2. Shut down and install the CPU and RAM.

3. Power up and install the Essentials Kit. (I understand that this is done by entering the Essentials Kit key.)

 

Does this sound reasonable?  Is there a better way of proceeding?

 

Also, if we were to install the Essentials Kit first, does the host need to be restarted for the change to take effect?
