Web Client/Horizon Client SSL Certificate

Hi,

Do I need a public CA if I want to access my virtual desktops from public/internet using Horizon Client or Web(HTML) client? I have an Enterprise CA that I tried to use but whenever I access my virtual desktops from public/internet it still shows untrusted.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Panic requested by another PCPU caused by Win Server 2019 on boot

$

We have a long running ESXi instance (6.7.0 Update 2) that has been running a Win Server 2019 for over a year.  Upon a recent reboot, we are getting a red screen of death reading:

"Panic requested by another PCPU".

We have a mid-day snapshot from a few days back, and that will run fine.  But, once we reboot the VM, Windows will start to boot up (never get to the logon screen) and then freeze.  About a minute later the ESXI monitor will show this again.

I'm at a complete loss in how to diagnose and fix this issue.  The server is up and running right now (has been for hours), but a reboot will put us back in this state after about 5 minutes.

Any ideas?  I'll gladly supply any logs, etc.  Or, follow any links in collecting what is needed to further a solution.

Thank you for your time!

Upgrading a "Cluster" of ESXi hosts

Hi all,

I'm sturdying the VMware Press VCP-DCV book (2VO-621) and have come across what appears to be a conflicting statement on P270 for vSphere upgrades. At the top of the page it states:

"If you are remediating a cluster of ESXi hosts and there is a failure during the upgrade process with one of the hosts, the remediation process stops and no further hosts are upgraded"

Then in the next paragraph it states:

"If you are remediating a cluster of hosts in parallel, and a host encounters an error during the upgrade process, the remediation process continues for the other hosts, but upgrading stops for the host with an error"

Unless i'm misunderstanding the text, one of these statements is incorrect. Can someone advise which statement is correct please.

TIA

vSAN cluster IP change

Hi,

I have 3 node vSAN cluster , with ESXi 6.7 , vCenter inside the same cluster & VSS was used.

This cluster is moved to a new dc

I changed the MANAGEMENT ip of the 3 ESXi

IPs of all VMK will change as data center subnet is different & also ESXi hostname will needs to be changed too

My plan is irrespective of the old vSwitch ( it has 2 VSS  )  , setup new IPs with 2 uplinks , 10G each & single VSS

Any suggestions how can i ensure to get the VSAN cluster up with VMs on it running fine

Thanks

Connect guest machine directly to modem and to LAN via dual NIC?

$

I have very little experience with VMs and networking but I feel like this should be possible but have no idea what I'm doing so thought I'd ask for some help or opinions.

I have a normal PC running windows 10 that I use as a home server (Plex, backups, Webserver, game servers, etc...) with VMware Player (free version).

The system currently has 3 Network adapters, an onboard NIC and a dual port NIC in PCI slot.

I also have the netgear CM1200 modem with 4 ports.

My desire is to connect a VM running on the system to my LAN and a separate direct connection to the internet via the PCI NIC.

Really, I want one NIC for the HOST only, One for guest LAN only and 3rd for guest internet only.

I managed the host and guest effectively using their own NIC to LAN but if I add the direct connection to the modem in anyway it seems to prevent all connectivity to the VM.

Some things,

Seeing as I didn't build the system for this, pretty sure I don't have the ability to do PCI passthough.

With the direct to modem connection added to VM, ipconfig shows irregular IPs (subnetmask 255.255.0.0) and no gateway.

ipconfig on host shows a proper connection on the direct to modem line.

Thanks for any ideas!

P.S. A recommendation to more appropriate forums is also welcome.

Invoke-VMScript Response status code does not indicate success: 403 (Forbidden)

Hi,

Hope you're all well.

I am using Invoke-VMScript to interact with Windows VMs.

Something strange is happening. On my Windows 10 machine every time I do an invoke-vmscript, it carries out the script successfully on the VM, but it does not ever bring back a success message or the correct output.

It only says "Invoke-VMScript Response status code does not indicate success: 403 (Forbidden)." Although the script runs as expected on the VM I am never given feedback from PowerShell of the output.

However, if I try the same things on Windows Server 2016 machine, the output comes back successfully.

Know what's wrong?

Permissions required to authenticate to REST API

$

Hello,

One of our teams is requesting access to the Horizon 7.10 REST API to gather user session information and statistics.  I granted them Administrators(Read-only) role, but when trying to authenticate they get

{

  "status": "UNAUTHORIZED",

  "timestamp": 1604401593260,

"error_message": "Only Administrator on Root are allowed to access the REST APIs."

}

Granting full Administrator access resolves this issue but I don't want them to have full Administrator permissions.  Does anyone know the minimum necessary permissions to authenticate to the REST API and gather user session data?

Thank you!

standalone vCloud Director without NFS (10.2)

Hi all,

I am setting up a standalone single VCD 10.2 appliance. Is there no alternative for using NFS (or other shared volume). It add complexity to a so far simple setup.tup

Alternatively i am considering setting up a VM providing NFS. However, what are the pros and cons here? This way i am avoiding any external dependencies (storage). i van keep the VM close to the appliance, but is this an acceptable solution eventually for production? Any thoughts?

ESXi Licensing Problem

I may have downloaded the wrong installation binary, but my VM went down yesterday from a licensing problem: "Your evaluation license for ESXi has expired.". I only want ESXi and no other features, but when I go to the licensing tab, the following is displayed. Do I need to reinstall a different version of ESXi? I've been to ESXi 7.0 licensing webpage, but I'm still missing something - I'm not sure what to do there. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks

Idea how to improve Replication performances between VSphere vCenter 7.0.1 and vSphere Replication 8.3 using different Networks

$

Hi,

I need a Help to improve performances replication procedure.

This is scenario of my infrastructure:

two ESXi 7.0.1 with 2 NIC 1Gb 2 NIC 10Gb

Two NAS Storage with 2 NIC 1Gb, 2 NIC 10Gb

Two Switch with 8 port 1 Gb, 4 port 10Gb

My idea was to have:

1Gb network for Management and VM network

10Gb network for Vmotion, Storage and Replication

I have connected, all devices, one port 1Gb to Switch A and other 1Gb port to switch B, the same has been done for port 10Gb to create ridondances.

vSphere Server is connected to 1 Gb Networks.

With this configuration the Replication working but I have poor performances.

I have verified that we have a bottleneck with the Gateway because all traffic pass from network 1 Gb to network 10 Gb Utilized for write.

I have verified that vSphere Server can have a second NIC but it’s only for HA and doesn’t works as management and I can't use this to connect Replication Server to vSphere Server on the 10Gb networks.

The question is: to have good replications performances is I need to move all the management networks on 10Gb Networks or There are other configuration can I apply and I can  keep the management on 1Gb Networks?

Thanks for your support

Datastore space after snapshot

$

I have a datastore that's holding a single Windows Server 2016 VM.

On 10/27 PM the datastore used space was 1,451 GB when I took a VM snapshot and then downloaded/installed Windows Updates. On 10/28 AM I deleted the snapshot and then the datastore used space increased to 1,727 GB. That's an increase of 276 GB but used space as reported by Windows hardly went up at all.

What would explain a rise in datastore usage like this?

*I added the performance graph as an attachment since it's not allowing me to upload the image to this post.

Stormagic svsan 6.2 plugin installation

Hi

Stormagic svsan has been running on our vcenter server for the last few years and never had any issues, until we upgraded vCenter to 7.0 (from windows to VCSA)

I had to uninstall and reinstall the stormagic plugin, which for some reason the installation keeps on failing.

Stormagic servers and datastores are still running without any issues, its just the plugin that we couldn't install.

vCenter version: 7.0.0 (Build 16749670)

Stormgic svsan plugin version 6_2_update_3

Error while installing the plugin:

Multiple Vcenter Servers.

I have 2 Vcenter servers. One is the SSO server for both. It is joined to my AD domain. If I log into it with my vsphere credentials I see both servers. If I log in with my AD credentials I only see the SSO server. I get an invalid credentials error if I try to use AD on the second server.

I have verified that the AD shows as connected on the second box and that all the same permissions are there.

A bit of background I set up the first box and did the AD join before I setup the second server.

How do I get the second box to recognize the AD logins?

ESXI 7 network serial port licence level

What level licence do I need to be able to add a network serial port to a VM, "telnet://192.168.1.1:4001" for example. It seemed to work in the evaluation but since I have applied my Essentials licence it does not work. Can't find documentation anywhere that clearly describes what features are included in each level of licencing.

Hi,

I need a script which can covert thick disks to Thin, requirement is aa below.

1. Get VM name/Thick disks list, source datastore  and destination datastore from CSV file.

2. Move only the thick disks from the above VMs to destination data store by changing the provision type to thin.

3. Post that it has to migrate back the disk to source datastore.

Script has to run one after one.

I need your help to complete the above task. Kindly do the needful.

Image not mounting in Mojave VM

Using Fusion 11.x on Catalina, and one particular image (.iso) is connected to VM, but cannot mount..

Yet it mounts in Windows 7 VM, and Catalina (host) below, just fine..

Screen Shot 2020-11-04 at 2.11.55 pm.png

This is the error when i try to eject from the icon, yet i can eject it fine from Disk Utility ("mount" button, clicks but nothing.

Any solutions would be welcome. For now, i could just mount it on host and "Enable share folder", but would be best if i just could mount directly in fusion  instead.

Can vSAN and iSCSI share a VDS and its uplinks?

$

Hi Communities,

I have two vSAN clusters under one vCenter Server sharing a VDS. I want to use the vSAN iSCSI Target Service to access some of each cluster's vSAN storage from the other cluster. Using the vSAN VDS I added two new port groups iSCSI1 and iSCSI2 (in addition to the vSAN port group with the vSAN vmk with teamed uplinks), assigned each one an Active uplink (set the other uplink to Unused) and created a vmk in each port group then setup Network Port Binding for my iSCSI Software Adapter to use these vmks. I configured two targets for Dynamic Discovery and Rescan Adapter. This populates the Static Discovery list with two targets as expected including the correct IQNs, however the Network Port Binding tab shows Path Status: Not used which I guess is bad. Also no Devices or Paths are discovered. I wonder if it's sending its iSCSI discovery out the vSAN vmk...

Could this work? Should this work?

VM memory reclamation

$

currently analyzing how VMs' reclamation work in production environment(primarily vSphere 6.7) to prevent service down time.

I'm reading the document:https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.7/vsphere-esxi-vcenter-server-67-resource-management-guide.pdf

but still got some doubts that need to be clarified.

1. if a VM(allocated 16GB memory) is experiencing the memory ballooning of 6GB from ESXi, then what will the guest OS see its memory status? will the OS show that there's at least 6GB memory "used" or something?

2. setting VM's "sched.mem.maxmemctl" parameter to 0 meaning that ESXi can no longer balloon memory from that VM? is it logically a way to reserve memory for VM?

3. is there any parameters to set on the VM to prevent ESXi reclaim memory via swapping file? I don't see related configurations in the document.

4. does the VM "memory reservation" function always occupy ESXi's memory beforehand even that VM is not power on?

Shrink server on VM

Hi,

We are running ESXi 7.

Have a server running that is 400GB allocated in ESXi for the drive. We can shrink the drive size down to 300GB within Windows Server not a problem. However how would you shrink the file size for the VM to the 300GB? Only allows the same size or larger in the settings.

Connecting networks inside guest VM

$

Hi everybody,

I am a hardware engineer with good programming skills and intermediate networking knowledge in industrial environment (so it is Windows, Linux, PLC, embedded devices, virtual machines...) and came across an interesting issue which is driving me crazy since a few days.

I couldn't find info about it anywhere on the internet (this forum included), and also a lot of experimenting didn't bring any success.

I will describe my setup and the issues i have, maybe someone else has faced the same problem and can help (or maybe we can work together at it).

The host pc is a Win10 Pro machine and is quite restricted by domain policy.

One of the restrictions is that Internet Connection Sharing is disabled.

My company IT will not change it, they are really strict on that (also because it's not a work related issue).

My IoT device is Ethernet only and I can connect it to the Internet only through the laptop Ethernet (the hotel has only WiFi Internet in the rooms). WiFi for this device is not an option.

My VM is a VMware Player machine with 2 network adapters, since I already know that with multiple network connection it is necessary to avoid automatic bridging.

Therefore, I have removed my Ethernet and the WiFi adapters from VMnet0 and assigned them to VMNet3 and 2 respectively.

My VM has 2 network adapters, which I have connected to VMnet2 (direct bridging to host WiFi) and VMnet3 (direct bridging to host Eth port) respectively.

Guest operating system is Win10 Pro.

When I am able to connect the VM to Internet with direct bridging (VMNet2) I can enable ICS and everything works fine.

But when I am forced to use NAT, my device cannot connect to the Internet in any way.

I have tried to:

-disconnect, reconnect, enable, disable the connections in all possible sequences: no luck.

-use network bridging instead of ICS: no luck.

-restart VMware NAT and DHCP services: no luck.

-clear all routing / arp info: no luck.

-use of static or automatic IP addresses doesn't change anything.

AFAIK, the NAT/direct bridging of the host WiFi is 100% external to the VM, so why does it stop working when i (have to) use NAT?

IMHO this should work seamlessly also with NAT.

Conversely, when i try to use VMnet2 (direct bridging) I don't understand why the hotel router doesn't serve its connection request as it would do for a physical device.

I hope that a solution can be found. Thanks and regards,

Michael

How to upload plugin to cloud director and access log insight

$

We are two student interns that are trying to upload a plugin for wmware cloud director and got stuck.

We are using this code: GitHub - vmware-samples/vcd-ext-samples at developer-container/9.7-10.0

We have tried to use plugin-manager to upload but without luck.

When we run ng build there should be a zip-file but there is not.

We are not able to fully upload our plugin to our cloud director. We see it under "customize portal" but are not able to get it shown in the plugins dropdown so that we can open and show the page (the plugin is enabled). Is it possible to get a step by step on how to upload a plugin? Maybe our zip-file is not right?

Our plugin is about accessing log insight api to show specific data from there. Here we also have a problem to get a session through localhost, we are however able to get it through postman.

The message says that we are blocked by CORS policy (we are using Chrome). Any ideas what to do here?

Fully automatic QR-code generator for 2-Factor Authentication in Horizon View

$

We are using the 2-Factor Authentication from Google in Horizon View for all our external Horizon users. Therefore we have setup a CentOS VM with the Google Authenticator package installed. The Guide for this can be found here: https://blogs.vmware.com/consulting/files/2015/02/VMW_15Q1_TD_Horizon-View-Google-Authenticator_021715_FINAL_EMonjoin.pdf

Because Sysadmins are a bit lazy and we also do not want to generate every QR-code by hand for all our Users, we have come up with this fully automated Linux script.

A cronjob runs this script every 5 minutes. If a new user and HomeDir is created, the script automaticly creates the QR-code for this user and places a textfile with the URL for the QR-code in the Users Homedir. It works like a charm and saves us a lot of time.

Feel free to use this script in your own environment, but please leave the header info as it is

#!/bin/bash

# This script is created by John at RTV-Noord. You may use and distribute
# it as long as you keep this header as it is.
#
# THE USAGE OF THIS SCRIPT IS AT YOUR OWN RISK!

# There are some prerequisites to make this script work:
# - machine you run it from is a Active Directory Domain member
# - the share with AD homedirs is mounted on /mnt/home
# - the google-authenticator package is installed
# - replace domainname.com with your AD domainname

ls /mnt/home > all_users
MAKEQR=$(comm -3 all_users users_with_qr | wc -l)

if [ $MAKEQR -gt 0 ]; then
    echo "Found users without QR."    comm -3 all_users users_with_qr > users_without_qr    for user in $(cat users_without_qr); do        echo "    $(date) make qr for $user..."        su -l "$user@domainname.com" -c "google-authenticator -tdf -r 3 -R 30 -w 17 -Q UTF8 | grep http > google-authenticator.txt"        mv /home/$user@domainname.com/google-authenticator.txt /mnt/home/$user/    done    cat all_users > users_with_qr    rm users_without_qr    echo    echo "$MAKEQR QR-code has been created"

absent of uploading preconfigured profiles for macOS

So when i have an preconfigured signed profile downloaded from here step 4 point 1 for macOS I can't install from terminal any-longer since Apple has removed that option from version 10.15.4. WS1 doesn't support uploading of profiles for macOS currently, not sure if it's in the roadmap for future updates though(Jamf has it).

Deploying via mdm is the only solution when having a custom profile(if you don't wanna install them manually on the device).

Does anyone have any inside on this particular issue or a similar and have solved it?

SCSIcanonicalname?

Hi,

I am using the following script to keep track of RDMs in relation to migrations.

$DiskInfo= @()

$vm = Get-Cluster "CLUSTERNAME" | Get-VM

foreach ($VMview in Get-VM $vm | Get-View)

{

foreach ($VirtualSCSIController in ($VMView.Config.Hardware.Device | where {$_.DeviceInfo.Label -match "SCSI Controller"})) {

foreach ($VirtualDiskDevice in ($VMView.Config.Hardware.Device | where {$_.ControllerKey -eq $VirtualSCSIController.Key})) {

$VirtualDisk = "" | Select VMname, SCSIController, SCSI_ID, DiskName, DeviceName, DiskFile, DiskSize, type

$VirtualDisk.VMname = $VMview.Name

$VirtualDisk.SCSIController = $VirtualSCSIController.DeviceInfo.Label

$VirtualDisk.DiskName = $VirtualDiskDevice.DeviceInfo.Label

$VirtualDisk.SCSI_ID = "$($VirtualSCSIController.BusNumber) : $($VirtualDiskDevice.UnitNumber)"

$VirtualDisk.DeviceName = $VirtualDiskDevice.Backing.DeviceName

$VirtualDisk.DiskFile = $VirtualDiskDevice.Backing.FileName

$VirtualDisk.DiskSize = $VirtualDiskDevice.CapacityInKB * 1KB / 1GB

$DiskInfo += $VirtualDisk

}}}

$DiskInfo | sort VMname, Diskname | Out-GridView

Is there a way to add SCSI canonical name to this?

I am trying to wrap my head around calling these methods, is there a guide or comprehensive reference somewhere?

Advice on server hardware specification

$

Hi All,

Can I ask for a bit of advice.  I am looking at a HPE Server (ML350 Gen10) for a client (accounting firm) and wondered what specification you would use for the following scenario.

1 x VM - Windows Server 2019 / DC and network services / SQL Express running 2 server apps (IRIS and Virtual Cabinet)

- Note: SQL Express has a max database size limit of 10GB

- IRIS Server - Requirements 2 GHZ Processor / 16GB RAM / 300GB disk space

- Virtual Cabinet Server - Requirements 3Ghz Processor / 4GB RAM / 300GB disk space

1 x VM - Windows Server 2019 / RDS / 9 users running:

- Sage - Requirements 2Ghz Processor / 8GB RAM / Min 5GB disk space

- IRIS Client - Requirements 3Ghz Processor / 4GB RAM / Min 15GB disk space

- Virtual Cabinet Client - Requirements 2Ghz Processor / 4GB RAM / 150GB disk space

The current server is as follows:

- 1 x HP ML350p Gen8 with 24GB RAM / Raid 10 SAS drives

- Vmware ESXi 5.0 (Yes, this definitely should be upgraded)

- Services: DC running the server software detailed above.

The current Windows PC's are as follows:

- i5 or i7 Processor with a minimum 8GB of RAM.  They are never maxed.

Any advice on the right specification hardware and the correct VMware licensing would be greatly appreciated.

Dear,

I have a vmware machine that has grown to big.

The local folder is about 192 GB

If I check the disk inside vmware(win10) the size is 85 GB

From settings there are 200GB allocated.

I think there are a issue regarding snapshot. I did delete snapshots a while
back(from the menu), but I think one off the VMDK files is that file..

I have taken a backup off the folder, and when I deleted the disk an re-attached
vmdk file, I was able to boot the old snapshots.

If i then run the suite-api/api/deployment/node/services/info which all need to be online for the above to go on line i get

All is good except the last one. I cant for the life of me find how to troubleshoot this or any documentation on the agent on the vrops appliance its self. I can fine loads of stuff on remote agents but not this. Anyone any ideas what the command line is to at least try and start it.
