Move Disk From 1 Disk Group To Another - Claim Disk or Add A Disk To The Selected Disk Group?

$

Hi All

I am running a 3 node Hybrid vSAN cluster. Each host has 2 disk groups (1 SSD and 5 HDs in each disk group). vSAN is set to to manual mode for adding disks to storage. Somewhere along the line a mistake was made where on 1 of the hosts, disk group 1 has 6 capacity disks and disk group 2 has 4.

I need to move 1 disk from group 1 to group 2.

So far I have done the following:

1. Removed disk from disk group 1 - Full data evacuation (What would the difference have been if I chose ensure accessibility?).

2. Allowed vSAN to resync objects

I now want to move the disk over to disk group 2.

1. Do I need to clean the disk first? If so should this be done at RAID level or vSAN (Storage Adaptors - Erase Partitions on the Selected disks)

2. Do I need to "claim" the disk or "add a disk to the selected disk group"? (What is the difference?)

3. Once the disk is back in the group, will vSAN start moving objects onto it or is it recommended to do a manual disk re-balance?

4. Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Many thanks

VMware NSX esg sslvpn ping services problem

I configured sslvpn on nsx esg. When the client logs into esg normally, the client can't ping the server ip, but can access various applications and services on the server. I checked the firewall and didn't see any problems?

Issue while updating VCSA 6.5 linux to 6.7 latest patch

$

I've been trying to update my linux based VCSA on6.5.0.10000 Build Number 5973321 to 6.7.0.20100 Build Number 11338176 by logging into the VCSA GUI.

After "checking" and updating the available latest 6.7 patch, i am hitting a software installation failure at 50%. By looking at the software-update logs, it looks like the issue has something to do with specific rpm's.

Not sure how exactly i need to workaround with this issue.

Would be great if someone can share their expertise on how to workaround with this and continue with the update.

VMWare Workstation 12.5 Auto Suspend of Guests when Windows Host Shuts Down

$
0
0

I have created a work-around and will share here, because this is an important (essential) capability to have.

Background

Question:  How do I set up VMWare Workstation 12.5 (running on a Windows host) to automatically suspend all guest VM's when the host OS shuts down or restarts?

I have read several posts on this over the years:  I know they exist, but none are helpful.

Fact:  Windows 10 will automatically apply updates and restart the machine whenever it feels like it, with little ability for the user to control or disable this behavior.

I am a developer and business user, and use VMWare Workstation (NOT Server) so that I can have multiple VM's open for various interactive purposes:  different development environments, different applications, etc.

If Windows 10 chooses to apply an update in my absence (which it regularly does, without my ability to prevent this from happening), this essentially halts all the running VM's, causing loss of work and potential data corruption.  This is entirely unacceptable.

To be clear, this is not a matter of convenience (i.e. that I am lazy and don't want to suspend the gust VM's before I explicitly shutdown), but is rather that the host OS may spontaneously shutdown or restart without my control.  Thus random loss of work and data is an inherent and regularly-encountered aspect of running VMWare Workstation 12.5 on a Windows 10 host.  There must be a way to correct this problem.

Should be Automatic

According to:  VMware Workstation 12 Pro Release Notes a new feature of VMWare Workstation Pro 12 was:  "Automatically suspend virtual machines upon host shutdown".  But this does not seem to actually work / to be present, and I can find no menu options or documentation pertaining to this feature.

PItfalls

A Windows "shutdown" script won't always work for Windows 10 because of the way fastboot works and because of other changes to the shutdown sequence in Windows 10 (not well-understood).  This means that old answers that say "Create a shutdown script...configure in GPO", etc. are not satisfactory.

Even disabling fastboot does not allow shutdown scripts to run reliably.  There are a number of potential factors, including whether or not you are booting the host from a VHD or from a physical disk, edition of Windows, etc.

Furthermore, even if you could get the shutdown script to run reliably, it may run too late in the shutdown sequence--after the applications, including VMWare Workstation have been terminated...which means that the Windows shutdown script approach is not a useful option.

Solution:  Create a Scheduled Task in Windows Task Scheduler

The heart of this work-around is to create a scheduled task using the Windows Task Scheduler.  The scheduled task should be triggered by certain system events (not by a specific time-of-day schedule).

There are several different events that must trigger this task, as some events apply to only certain shutdown sequences (i.e. command line-initiated, Windows UI initiated, power button, system updates, etc.)

The actual script to execute is below.

The scheduled task should have the following:

Launch "Task Scheduler"

Click on "Task Scheduler Library" treeview (left side of screen)

Click on "Create Task" in the Actions window (right side of screen)

Under "General" tab, provide an appropriate name

Under "General" tab, check:  "Run only when the user is logged on"

Under "General" tab, check:  "Run with highest privileges"

Under "Triggers", you will click "New" to add a new trigger, and will repeat this and the following settings 6 times (6 individual triggering events should be set).  For each:

"Begin the task:" should be set to "On an event"

Select the Log, and the Source, and type in the Event ID for each of the 6 events.  The rest of the settings on the screen can be left at their defaults.

Log:System

Source:User32

Event ID:1074

Log:  Microsoft-Windows-Winlogon/Operational

Source:Winlogon

Event ID:7002

Log:  Microsoft-Windows-Eventlog-ForwardingPlugin/Operational

Source:Eventlog-ForwardingPlugin

Event ID:6005

Log:  Microsoft-Windows-Eventlog-ForwardingPlugin/Operational

Source:Eventlog-ForwardingPlugin

Event ID:6006

Log:Security

Source:Microsoft Windows security auditing.

Event ID:4634

Log:Security

Source:Microsoft Windows security auditing.

Event ID:4647

Under "Actions" tab click "New", the default Action of "Start a program", and click Browse or type in the path to the batch file (see below for the batch file itself).

By using a scheduled task that is triggered by these events, it seems like Windows 10 does reliably launch the batch file at shutdown (or more technically correct, at user logoff).

Batch File

Create a batch file and save it somewhere on you local hard drive.  You can use Notepad to do this.  Name it something that ends in .bat (not .txt)...so when in Notepad you click Save, make sure "Save as file type" is set to "All Files (*.*)" so that Notepad does not append a .txt to the filename.

The contents of the file should be something like this:

@echo off

echo SuspendRunningVMs Command (x64)...

SETLOCAL

REM Specify where vmrun.exe can be located

SET WSPath="C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation"

REM Get the list of currently running VMs

%WSPath%\vmrun.exe list | FIND /V "Total running VMs:" > %temp%\vmlist.txt

REM Suspend all running VMs

FOR /F "delims=*" %%v IN (%temp%\vmlist.txt) DO CALL :SuspendVM "%%v"

:WaitLoop

echo Waiting for the VMs to suspend...

REM Pause until no more VMs are running

%WSPath%\vmrun.exe list | FIND "Total running VMs: 0"

IF NOT ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO End

timeout /t 10 /nobreak

GOTO WaitLoop

:End

echo End of script; all VMs suspended.

ENDLOCAL

GOTO :EOF

REM Suspend a VM

:SuspendVM

REM Suspend any running VM.  Workaround a "vmrun list" quirk that outputs

REM a blank line, by not trying to suspend a blank VM

IF %1x==x GOTO :EOF

echo Suspending VM %1

%WSPath%\vmrun.exe suspend %1

REM Allow some time after suspend call (allow disk to write vmem).

echo Wait a little bit for the VM to commit...

timeout /t 15 /nobreak

GOTO :EOF

REM Resume a VM (not used now, but may have use in future)

:ResumeVM

REM Resume any suspended VM.  Workaround a "vmrun list" quirk that outputs

REM a blank line, by not trying to start a blank VM

IF %1x==x GOTO :EOF

echo Starting VM %1

%WSPath%\vmrun.exe start %1

GOTO :EOF

:EOF

Summary

I cannot understand how auto-suspend of all VM's upon shutdown of the Windows host has not been and is still not a built-in feature of VMWare Workstation running on Windows.  This seems to be critical to anyone who does not want to loose work and risk corrupting data in their VM's.  This need has intensified with Windows 10 as the host, because Windows will spontaneously reboot the computer when it applies updates, and Microsoft does not provide a way to prevent this spontaneous reboot from occurring.

Please, VMWare, make this capability a feature of future VMWare Workstation releases.  This is not a "server-only" feature:  even interactive users of VM's don't want to loose unsaved data and state of their virtual machines.

Hi guys, I'm new in the forum, I hope you can help me in this Titanic enterprise.
I have this problem ... a user on youtube managed to connect Whonix gateway virtualizing it with Virtualbox directly on Linux, creating a connection in Bridge with the virtual interface vmnet1 generated by VmWare workstation ... I tried several times ... but later installing Vmware on linux does not allow me to configure the network in Bridge on vmnet1, giving me the error that the network adapters are missing ... do you have any suggestions?
Thank you very much for helping

hi guys,

i want to install vmware identity manager on my horizon environment,

I've tried to get some answers from vmware documentations and google without any luck of the next questions

1) what's the saved data in the database? (does it save the user's password?)

2) what's happen to the VIDM System if the database is not available in any kind of reason?

3) Does it possible to use multiple vIDM Connector directing to the same domain for redundancy?

Horizon Client for Linux 4.9.0 fails to run due to undefined symbol

The VMware Horizon Client for Linux version 4.9.0 fails to start with the following error on my machine:

$ vmware-view
/usr/lib/vmware/view/bin/vmware-view-crtbora: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/vmware/libcrtbora.so: undefined symbol: _ZN4Glib7ustring5beginEv

The missing symbol is:

$ echo "_ZN4Glib7ustring5beginEv" | c++filt
Glib::ustring::begin()

My machine is running Fedora 28 and the glibmm library does provide the Glib::ustring::begin() symbol, but only through C++11 ABI:

$ objdump -T /usr/lib64/libglibmm-2.4.so.1|grep _ZN4Glib7ustring.begin | awk '{ print $NF; }' | c++filt
Glib::ustring::begin[abi:cxx11]()

Is there any chance of getting this fixed in a newer version of the Horizon Client by providing a build for a recent Fedora release?

Hi there,

happy new year.

A question about deployments. Is it possible to delete the custom properties from a deployment (which were added via the blueprint)?

I believe it should be done via vCACCAFE?.. Any hints and reference to code examples? Or should values be specified with "__" as prefix if it not possible to delete them afterwards?

Many thanks and regards K

Hello,

I tried to update an existing SUSE-Linux 9 on vmware Fusion 11 on High Sierra. The vm-machine was running fine with vmware 6 on macOS 10.10.

I logged in as root and ran ./vmware-install. This worked, but at some point I got the following messages, like shown in the screenshot.

I am not a total linux expert, but I need this old Linux mainly because of an perfectly working Lyx.

Thanks for all support!

VMware 6.5 ESXI

I have one VM a Windows 2016 Data Center Server running Exchange 2016 DAG and this is node 1

I have three methods of accessing the console of the server

1. VNC viewer

2. Team Viewer

3. Console from my vCenter

All three methods show the exact same display ether blank or grey

I am able to ping the host

I am able to send remote power shell commands

Email is still working.

The Server has 32 GB of Ram and Exchange has a habit of using it all then relishing it.

NODE 2 is fine. The only difference between NODE 1 and Node 2 is the number of CPU's  NODE 1 has 8 and Node 2 only 2

Any ideas

Thank you and Happy New Year to All

IP Address management using native (no NSX) vRA Network Profiles

$

Hi,

I have been trying to understand the different states an IP Address within the vRA Network Profile has!

The problem statement:

I have 2 Network Profiles, QA & DEV. Presently only "QA" network profile is being used and no IP address from the static IP pool for "DEV" network profile has been provisioned.

Some IP Addresses from the static IP Pool defined within the "QA" network profile have been provisioned.  Some IP address from the QA network profile are in Allocated or Unallocated state. The question is how do I identify unprovisioned IP Addresses from a network profile using vRO?

Am I right in stating that IP address state transitions from Unprovisioned to Provisioned. And within a Provisioned state an IP Address could either be Allocated (assigned to a vRA item)  or Unallocated. When I release the IP Address, it moves to Provisioned-Unallocated state, and when I update the IP Address to be delete (if for lack of a better word that's what it means) it actually moves the IP address to an Unprovisioned state. An unprovisioned IP Address is part of the network pool which can then assigned by vRA to an provisioned (catalog) item.

Am I thinking right or have I completely understood this concept incorrectly?

Thanks. Appreciate your feedback.

Regards Shekhar
