Hi,

I got myself a license to use vSphere from school. However, I'm trying to install it and I'm getting PSOD with a couple of error messages. I have never used/or tried vSphere before, so all help is welcome!

Also SDDC manager controller VM console I get the below error.

"Failure forking: Resource temporarily unavailable"

I cannot ssh to sddc manager it throws me out.

Anyone seen the above error before.  All the PSCs and vcenters ok.

ID Firewall is not working - NSX 6.4.4

Hi,

Well, I've almost done everything already to configure the IDFW, but it didn't work, I did the following:

1- deployed GI to the cluster, and the status of GI is healthy, and there's a framework agent VM on each host.

2- added a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain.

3- added another W2KR12-R2 domain.

4- made sure that NSX can successfully sync and pull event logs from both domains.

5- created the security group with a Directory group.

6- installed a full VMware tools package.

7- created a firewall rule, and placed it in a "ID as a source" enabled FW section.

8- when I click on the "source" in that firewall rule, it could successfully query the account that is currently logging into the VM.

9- tried the VM with both domains.

No use, the rule never applies. I use vSphere 6.7 latest, NSX 6.4.4, and a guest Win7 32-bit VM.

in VMware docs, there's a command to test, but they didn't mention where should I run it, which is very mis-leading, the command is: GET https://NSX-IP-ADDR/1.0/identity/userIpMapping

That's all

"Error: Unable to connect to the Converter helper server on the destination virtual machine."

The remote machine is red hat 6.9 machine.

It is on the same network as the vcenter.

The process just gets stuck on 1%.

Question/Suggestion : Planned maintenance mode

0
0

Hello.

I use Horizon 7 and I'd like to know if there's a way (or if it would be a good idea to implement it) for a planned maintenance mode.

Ex : I have a pool of VMs and they are occupied most of the time. I can't kick people out for what i have to do (also, rude) but i'd like to plan to put them in maintenance mode, one by one, as soon as someone logs off so i can plan to do what is needed on all of them in the end.

With some extra feature like sending me an email if one of them got freed and switched to MM, that would help a lot.

Thank you.

nsx-t only a route in service router

0

there's a bit issue in my nsx-t environment which is a single-tier(tier 0) topology with N-S and E-W traffic.

two logical switches are created for VMs to connect and these LS can be routed via distributed router(in the tier 0 router)

the VMs in different subnet can ping to each other and the router ports.

here's the forwarding table as shown in figure below:

DR.jpg

i found that the distributed router could not ping to 169.254.0.2 and any downlink ports such as 10.10.10.1 and 172.24.255.254

an edge VM is created to load the service router(in the tier 0 router) and provide N-S traffic,

however in the edge VM command line, the service router have a connected route alone, as shown below:

SR.JPG

i did configure the tier0 router with a uplink port (ip: 10.101.8.21) to reach the TOR switch public network(10.101.8.0/24)

but there should be transit route like 169.254.0.0/28 in the service router...

from the external network 10.101.8.0/24 i couldn't ping to 10.101.8.21 and the VMs couldn't reach the service router.

what kind of misconfigurations would that be?

Conflicts with vim25 between plug-ins

Hi Laurent,

we are now working on our newest version of the plug-in using the 6.5 sdk for production.  Our plug-in is working fine here.

But now we have installed another plug-in (from a different company) and then tried to deploy our plug-in again.

Our plug-in will not now be deployed.

When the plugin package is read, it tries to deploy vim25.jar.  That fails because it is already deployed by another plug-in.

Then our plug-in won't be deployed, because it has a missing dependency.

I was wondering (for a long time now), why it is necessary for the plug-ins to bring the vim25.jar with them. It

seems strange, that such an important jar, which is used by probably all providers is not installed already in

server/repository/usr directory.  Can you tell us why - so we can understand that?  And if it is not posible, how we

can get around these problems?

Many thanks

Cathy

Migration of VM from ESX 4.0 to ESXi 6.0 using NFS3.0 as staging datastore

0
0

Hi All

I have been asked to migrate VM's from ESX4.0 to ESXi 6.0

Since ESXi 6.0 doesn't support VMFS 3.0 anymore we cannot have a shared staging LUN in old end new environment to cold migrate the VM's.

The usual migration approach would require an ESXi 5.5 as stepping stone before VM is migrated to ESXi 6.0.

While going through the documents on VMware I was trying to look for a way to avoid need for  intermediary ESXi5.5 environment.

I found a possible solution to use staging NFS data store in ESX 4.0 and ESXi 6.0 environment.

Looking at the VMware documentations ESX4.0 and ESXi6.0 both support NFS3.0

https://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r41/vsp_41_esx_server_config.pdf  Page22: "The NFS client built into ESX uses Network File System (NFS) protocol version 3 to communicate with the NAS/NFS servers"

NFS Protocols and ESXi

So does that mean I can use NFS to get the ESX4.0 VM cold migrated across to ESXi6.0 without having to move first on ESXi5.5

Could someone please help confirm if the above approach is possible?

Yesterday, I can still use it normally. I started the virtual machine this morning and started to boot normally. When I am ready to enter the system, it will suddenly shut down automatically, I can no longer open the machine. The following problem is displayed: Failed - Unable to perform an attempt (power off) in the current state.

Upgrade from vCenter 6.0 to vCenter 6.5

Hello Forum Members,

I am planning to upgrade vCenter Server 6.0 Essentials to vCenter Server 6.5

I am planning to upgrade all our ESXi hosts from vSphere 6.0 to vSphere 6.5 U2 - the max for our platforms.

I have received good info from internet, vmware, and the forum. but I still have questions.

I have seen where upgrading vCenter Server is really a migration to another ESXi host, then changing ips, etc.

We are using an HP DL380p for the "host" for the vCenter Server. Am I required to have another physical host

to perform the upgrade/migration or can I perform upgrade/migration to the same host, or another vm?

That part of the upgrade is not clear to me.

Thanks for a good source of information,

Oliver G

Issues In place upgrade vCenter from 5.0 to 5.5 (Licensing?)

Hi Team,

Firstly, Yes I know I'm way behind but we have a simple setup and 5.0 was working perfectly for us over the years.

A little about my setup …

Production Host

VMWare ESXi, 5.0.0, 469512

VMWare vCenter  5.0.0, 455964

vCenter VM is on Win Server 2008 R2

Veeam 9.5 VM Server is used for backup and replication

Running 13 VMs including DC's

VMs stored on separate storage array

So we're finally attempting to upgrade from ESXi vSphere 5.0 to 5.5. In research it was recommended to upgrade vCenter 5.0 to version 5.5 first.

I ran the Simple Install option  and all components installed without a hitch until it got to the vCenter portion. It requested a license key

1. Found that our current 5.0 License could not be applied to 5.5 (I thought it would work since its in the same N.x series)

2 I chose to go bypass the license input and use the evaluation version but then got a message saying it still was not compatible (can remember exactly what the msg was)

Fortunately the old vCenter Sphere client still works although the new components seem to have installed.

Can you guys provide some advice on best path to vSphere 5.0 to 5.5 upgrade please.

(my only Christmas gift request)

Thanks Much!

vsphere 6.7 LSI raid card, can't get drive status

0

Hi!

I have this server setup at home:

SuperMicro X10SLL-F

Intel Xeon E3-1241 v3

32GB 3CC 1600

LSI 8708EM2

2x Velociraptor 10k 300gb RAID 1

4x WD Red 2TB Raid 5

I was running Vsphere 6.0 since a long time, and I decided to go over 6.7. Installation worked fine, I have access to everything, all is working... Except 2 things:

1. I can't get my LSI 8708EM2 (detected as a 1078) to show drive status

2. Can't get my Storage Manager to access disk info or rebuild raid.

When I was on vSphere 6.0, I was able to see my drive status (and veeam one could alert me), and with my WIndows VM, I had LSI MSM and I was able to configure the raid card.

So what I did:

Install SAS driver I was using in version 6 --> not working

Installed the SMIS I had  --> not working

Installed lastest SMIS  --> not working

Disabled the Firewall --> not working

I have no idea what else I can do. I know it's an old card, but I got it for cheap. Any idea how can I get this fixed?

Thanks

Hi Luc,

good morning .

have you authored any function or   script  that will help us to optimize storgage performance.

i need to fix below problem statement which is coming in the form of alert.

esxiname:naa.60a980002d657037693f424e6a774732

InstanceValue: 64

InstanceSituation: The disk total latency is high

ComponentType: ComputerSystem

Component: VMwareESX

SubComponent: Disk

right now stats level one is configured on vcenter so i can not check using powercli however vsphere webclient is giving historical data using custom graphs.

also i see two different metrics for disks and datastore .by disk webclientmeans local harddrives of esxi or virtual machine disks?if you could suggest something on it.

Dedicating vCPU cores

0
0

Hello Experts,

Need an advice on to how to dedicate the CPU cores to a VM. Actually, my requirement is something like this :

I am having - ESXI hosts with 2 sockets * 18 cores = 36 cores in total ( assuming will not enable hyperthreading ) ( Intel processor with 2.6 GHz)

Now would like to deploy 2 types of VM :

1_ 1 Virtual Machines of 24 core (it is must to have 1:1 cpu core ratio meaning no oversubscription is allowed)

2_2 Virtual Machine of 10 cores each  (  can have 2:1 cpu core oversubscription for these VMs )

Now, the total cores I have on ESXI hosts is 36 and therefore this is how I am planning :

36 cores = 24 cores ( from 1 VM with 1:1 cpu core ratio ) + 10 cores ( from 2 VM where 2:1 cpu core oversubscription is possible ) + 2 cores for running ESXI 6.5 host.

Experts could you please guide me if this is the right plan and division of cores . If this is the right planning could you please guide me how will ensure that 1 VM will get 24 cpu cores exactly.
