Supermicro X10DRi

Queries on vSAN

We need to use 2 nodes for vSAN but connectivity is the main area of concerns as we have only 1 Gig port and following is the make model of the switch Cisco switches (WS-C3560G-24PS).

Is it possible to directly connect those 2 nodes to bypass 10 Gig switch by using Cat cable or FC cable for 10 Gig network. Also why we need 10 Gig network for this solution in some forums i am seeing 1 Gig will work but vmware is recommending 10 Gig.

Both the nodes having below configuration :

SSD = 480 GB * 2

HDD = 300 GB * 8

RAM = 64 GB

1 GB NIC = 4 ports

10 Gig NIC = 2 ports

For Net-witness we are using other host having below configuration and on same host we will use backup solution:

SSD = 110 GB * 2

HDD = 300 GB * 5

RAM = 32 GB

CPU = 1

1 GB NIC = 2 Ports

vSAN Witness traffic, Public, VMotion, VSAN, Management, Multicast, Backup how it connected. And use of vSAN Witness traffic, VSAN, Multicast.

Migrate two Windows Vcenter to VCSA 6.7U1 and enable Linked mode with NEW sso domain

Hi all,

i'm writing this post because i need migrate My Two Windows Vcenter server 6.7U1 (with embedded PSC)  to a VCSA 6.7U1 with Linked mode. I'm confusing to keep enbedded psc or separate it.

If the right chose is separate the PSC, how can configure PSC HA ?

Requirements

- I have SRM between two sites. The SRM (after reconfiguring must be operational)

- I need to keep 2 different SITES but only one NEW SSO domain (example vsphere.local) and decommission the 2 actual sso domains.

- I need to view the 2 vcenters in one point of managment (i need to activate linked mode)

- I need to activate vcenter HA to delete single point of failure.

I ask you which are the migration step.

1) Migrate the vcenters from windows to VCSA with GUI wizard, correct? This process keep sso domainS and sites, correct?

2) ?

3) ?

I thank all the people who will help me !

All Flash Server/VSAN Configuration for Kubernetes on OpenStack

Hi,

for each (internal) customer we are deploying dedicated k8s clusters in OpenStack tenants. Currently our payload cluster size is 8 DL360g9 hosts with 2 x 14 cores and 512GB + Hybrid VSAN (1x800 + 7+900). We have to build new payload clusters and think about using All Flash. Currently neither the performance nor the amount of storage the customers will need is clear. We started with projects that demanded only little persitent storage, now they are growing and new projects are testing the platform.

I thought about the follwing config:

8 x HPE DL360Gen10 with 10 disk bays

2 x Xeon 6154, 2 x 18 Cores @3.0GHz

768 GB RAM

P816i-a Array Controller

2 x 800 SAS WI SSD

4 x 3,84TB RI SSD

3 x 562SFP NIC

The SSD's would the be configured as 2 disk groups, with ~120 TB RAW capacity and ~45TB usable with FTT=1 and 30% slack space. If needed we can add 2 additional disks to each disk group.

Does this look sane, any ideas for improvement or lessons learned?

'Performance degradiation VMs tolerate' setting: based on which memory metric?

0
0

Hello

I am trying to find out on which memory metric the 'performance degradiation VMs tolerate' setting in the Admission Control menu is based on.

Let's do an example:

I have 10 ESXi hosts, each with 512 GB RAM, resulting in total 5 GB of RAM. Used memory in the cluster is 2.87 TB (If I sum up the memory consumed value on all VMs manually, I do get virtually the same amount of memory):

Some VMs do have reservations, most VMs don't. The total amount of reservations in the cluster is 1.2 TB.

Admission Control is configured like this:

Normally, I configure 'Host failures cluster tolerates' to five hosts, so 50 percent of my "stretched over two sites cluster" can fail. In this example let's configure this setting to six hosts. This results in this graphic:

OK above we see the gray shaded bar, these are my 60 % failover capacity. I also see the reserved memory in blue. So in this state, every VM with reservations of course receives its reservation and the rest of available memory (for the vms without or partially reservations) is the light gray bar. This is approximately (5TB*0.4 - 1.2 TB)  = 0.8 TB RAM.

From this it follows that

  • in the normal state (10 hosts available) the vms are using 2.87 TB (thereof  1.2 TB reserved) --> unreserved capacity occupied by all VMs: 1.67 TB
  • in a failover state (4 hosts available) the vms can only use 2 TB (thereof still 1.2 TB reserved) --> unreserved capacity occupied by all VMs: 0.8 TB

So in a failover state (4 hosts running), the vms without reservations do have to move closer together. But it seems, that there is still enough capacity and there is no warning that the running VMs utilization cannot satisfy the configured failover resources on the cluster. Although the vms have less memory available, there is not yet a performance degradiation!

OK, lets try with 'Host failures cluster tolerates' set to 7 hosts. Of course, the gray shaded bar is getting longer, the blue bar for reserved memory is the same and gap between - the non reserved memory) is getting very small, only approximately 0.3 TB. So now, after waiting a few minutes, the cluster is complaining about insufficient failover resources...

So I am curious which memory metric is used here to do the calculation. I don't think it is only memory active? Because a calculation based only on memory active seems to be a calculation too progressive in my opinion and with only taken memory active in consideration one can expect some performance degradiation. Is it probably memory active and a certain percentage as a buffer?

Does anyone know here more how this calculation works? Because I would like to have a feeling how my vms will perform in a failover state (apart from that the algorithm tells me that the vm's don't have memory issues and that "the same performance is guaranteed...")

Best regards

Roland

Virtualize JRE for use with specific URL

I have users that go to a URL and run a Java-based application.

Unfortunately the app requires an older version of JRE.

How can I virtualize this version of JRE?

Like maybe virtualize the %JAVA_HOME% and point it to the old JRE?

Run Script in Guest VM - Hangs, Never Completes

0
0

Hello Everyone,

I am having an issue with VRO and the 'Run Script in Guest' workflow. I am currently passing in a script (.cmd file) for the workflow to run and install an application.

I see that VRO has created the typical vmware## folder in C:\Windows\Temp and copied the script output there, as I expect. It is also launched a cmd.exe process, as I would expect.

However, this is where the workflow gets stuck. The cmd.exe process never ends, and the 'Run Script in Guest' workflow goes into an infitite loop of hitting the 'Improved Sleep' workflow, waiting for cmd.exe to exit.

I have no idea why this cmd.exe process won't end. This exact workflow has worked in the past, and to my knowledge, neither the script, application, or OS has been updated/patched/changed. We have other peices of software that are being installed in exactly the same way that do not have this issue.

Furthermore: I just tried using a powershell script (instead of .cmd) to install this application (IBM BigFix, in our case), and it runs the script successfully, but does not install the application. If I login through RDP and run the same exact script, it installs as expected...

Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Allocation requests are taking 18 seconds per machine and single threaded?

0

Platform: vRA 7.4 with a single appliance and embedded vRO.  Appliance is sized appropriately (physically and jvm heap sizes are fine for all running processes).

Checking to see if this is expected behavior and anyone is seeing this.  When requesting a blueprint for a simple RHEL build, we are seeing that the "Allocate" step is taking 18 seconds per machine requested (see attached pic).  If a customer requests 10 or more machines, vRA times out internally and throws a horrible message about the "Provider not being available" and the REST API user gets a permissions error.  10 or more machines appears to exceeds the global "Extensibility lifecycle message timeout." setting which is 3 minutes by default.  18 seconds per machine and single threaded; how do we know this?  Running tests of 1 through 10 machines always results in 18.3 seconds wait time per machine.  Man, this seems excessive.

Sure, we can raise up the timeout, but where do I start looking to improve this wait time, since it is internal vRA services talking to itself on the same appliance? Does this hgave to be single-threaded and blocking?  Appreciate any feedback.

Windows + Ubuntu | Nested Virtualization | Ubuntu VM Crashes

Hey,

I'm using a physical Windows 10 PC with VMware Workstation 14 on it.

I've created an Ubuntu 18.4 VM and inside this VM I also installed VMware Workstation.

My goal is to create all my VMs inside this Ubuntu VM, because I want to integrate it with GNS3 and Ubuntu is better for that purpose than windows.

I have enabled this two fields on the Ubuntu VM, so there should not be any problems with Nested Virtualization:

All my VMs' Disks should be located on my physical computer and my Ubuntu VM reach them using Workstation shared folder ["/mnt/hfgs/Spageteach" when "Spageteach" is the shared folder].

But every time I start a VM inside the Ubuntu VM, the Ubuntu crashes and reboots.

"Unicorn-Firewall-MDS" is the VM inside the Ubuntu VM, and I've attached its logs.

I'm keep seeing these messages on the Log, so it may be something related to the fact that the CD-Rom is on a Shared Folder?

I don't know, this is just a guess, as I'm not familiar enough with these topics.

Can you assist?

Identifying OS Type Mismatch - Need a Supermetric?

0
0

A little long-winded history (I opened an SR - awaiting feedback) -

So turns out, vROps actually has two different properties (much like RVTools does) to show the VM's Guest OS Type configuration setting and a different one to show the Guest OS as seen by the VMware tools.  Unfortunately, the Dashboards, Views, Summary Display, & Reports do not tell you which property they are using in their generic labels.  So depending on what and where you're looking in vROps, you could potentially be looking at the wrong thing if you have improperly configured VMs.

For instance, say you build a VM as 2008R2 back in the day, and you did an inplace upgrade to 2012 but forgot to change the Guest OS Type in vCenter to 2012.

Looking at that VM In vROps, "VM > Details > Property|Configuration|Guest Fullname" will show 'Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)'.

However, also looking at that VM in vROps, under "VM > Details > Property|Summary|Guest Operating System|Guest OS Full Name" will show 'Microsoft Windows Server 2012 (64-bit)'.

If you look at the VM's Summary page / About Me section, it shows the 'Summary|Guest Operating System|Guest OS Full Name' value.

If you look at that same VM in the default dashboards or canned VM Inventory Summary view, it shows the 'Configuration|Guest Fullname' value.  But, you don't know that because a custom label (by VMware-- not me/end-user) was applied to the View to just show "Guest OS" so you don't know what you're looking at unless you edited the view to get the specific property.

It's a major PITA and misleading!

Obviously we need to correct all these so the mismatch doesn't exist in the firstplace; and, I can create a view that shows both properties and then export to xls and filter on ones that aren't equal-- but that's all even more PITA.

I'd like to create a supermetric (call is OSMismatch) that says something like, "if "Configuration|Guest Fullname" != then set OSMismatch = '1'"  or something along those lines.

Does anyone know if you can actually DO something like this in a supermetric?  ie, compare two properties and set a new boolean value based on the compare results?

vcsa 6.5 update - VAMI not working (SOLVED)

0
0

I updated vcsa 6.5 to build 4944578 (released 2/2/2017) and the management interface was not working after the update.  Poking around I found that the vami-lighttp service startup was failing.  Looking further it was complaining it couldn't bind to an IPv6 address.  hmmm...   Further checking found there were complaints being spit out about the config file.  So I checked /opt/vmware/etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf and there was a duplicate entry for server.use-ipv6 = "disable", with the 2nd occurrence coming on the last line of the file.  I commented this last line out and restarted the service.  Bingo, it works.

Including here so anyone else that hits this problem can find my solution.

I am doing a POC on HW VTEP swicth Integration to NSX controller. ANY switch can be configured as HW VTEP Gateway to NS controller even if not certified by VMware .

0

Hi,

I need to integrate a physical switch with NSX controller.  This is for a POC for HW vtep integration with NSX controller

Anybody pls let me know what are the requirements.

example:

My switch is running with linux 4.19.

It has SHA1 , opensslv3,

and has OVSDB Version 2.5

The NSX server is running on other side with version 6.3.4

Topology:

both switch and server are in same network:

Switch(hw VTEP)[(ovsbd-server)]--------------------------------(ovsdb-client)[NSX-controller]

ovs-pki init

ovs-pki req+sign is used for generating certificate.

i an using vtep-ctl set-manager ssl:IP:6640 to initiate a connection to ovsdb-client running at [NSX controller].

i expect that ssl connection will be initiated by server in this case and ovsdb-client will be listening passively to connections.

Query: Will switch(not certified by vmware) get detected at nsx controller ??

Thanks,

saroj
