Hello everyone,

I'm trying to deploy openstack however I get the following error when attempting to deploy:

There are no addresses on this network in use. It's brand new. The only thing giving out an ARP entry is the gateway. I seem to get this error for any subnet I try

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Registeration of web client plugin fails on 6.5 RC with "Connection closed" error

We are trying out to qualify our web client plugin on vCenter 6.5 RC. The registration fails saying that the "Underlying connection was closed". An exactly similar setup with 6.5 beta works absolutely fine.

Both the setups use same vertical stack below. i.e till windows server 2008 R2. The 6.5 RC was also tried on windows server 2012. But to get the same error suring plugin registration.

The services listed in the host w.r.t VMWare are exactly same and are started. Is there anything that is changed between beta and RC for plugin developers to check out for?

Anticipating your help here. We are blocked with the qualification as of now.

Network Connectivity Lost

Hi Guys,

I have a EOL server which is running ESX5.0. Already purchased a new HP DL380 G9 server and would like to migrate the VM to the new server.

I had installed ESXi 5.5 U2 on the new server and I used Veeam version 6 to backup the whole VM and restored on the new server.

This morning I have backup the VM and restore it on the new server.

It was working fine at the first 30 minutes but after 30 minutes, the network connectivity lost.

I have no idea what is causing the network connectivity lost. I tried few method like clear arp table on esx and switches but still the same.

Just curious is it possible to backup and restore the VM to different model hardware ?

Appreciate if you guys can give me some idea on what cause this issue.

Thank you very much in advance.

Extract ESXi host information from vm guest server

Hi All,

I have an issue with one of the vm's in our environment, what i would like to do is, extract esxi host information (hostname or IP) from a guest virtual machine running server 2008, could anyone help me with this ?

I know most will say it cant be done, others will ask why as it will expose a security flaw etc...Below i will try to explain to the best of my knowledge why i want to do this.

One/more of our system admins are a bit lazy unfortunately and have been cloning servers without running sysprep after the cloning process, as a result I have ended up with what looks like a vm powered off in the vmware console, however i am able to ping the machine, since its running in a terminal services environment, i can RDP to it and see that users are connected to the vm. Theres only 1 vm that shares the same IP and hostname.

Troubleshooting so far

- Search for hostname and IP address through the vSphere client

- Run a script that queries DNS names and IP addresses of all vm guests and displays its output

- Checked and matched up the MAC address of the NIC adaptor's

- Ran a couple of tools that also query vm hostnames and IP's to see if the output was the same as the script that was run.

Unfortunately the MAC address for the NIC is the same as the powered off VM, and the DNS queries etc all point to a powered off VM.

So i was wondering if i could get the esx hostname that the vm resides on from the guest, to carry out the next phase of my troubleshooting

Thanks in adavnce for your time

Hello,

We have 3 ESXi Servers and 3 Synology storages , we also have a VCenter Server that we can manage all of them.

The VCenter Server has also VMWare Update Manager in order to update our ESXi.

We just wanted to know the steps needed and the best practices in order to update succesfully with correct order the ESXi , VCenter Server and the Synology (we do not want Synology documentation).

Thank you,

Dear all,

one of my staff said she could not connect her desktop vm22 and the view client said "the view agent reports that this desktop source is unable to accept connections". my view administrator displays that “the pending session on machine xx for user xxx has been expired” . but i then assigned another user to the same desktop, everything looks fine.

background:

1. I am using view 6.0.

2. This user used to assigned another desktop vm06. it took a long long time (more than 30 minutes) to login (agent set not delete local persona) , This Morning when she tried to connect(already logged in before, here just reconnect),  she got "there is no available gateway for this display protocol". So i assigned her to another desktop vm22

Is there something wrong with this user account or something else. Need your help!!! Thanks in advance!

Home LAB Setup Issue

Hi guys, I'm not vmware guy but I'm building a home lab and I'm having some problems.

I have a R710 running WIN 2k12 on it and on that I installed vmware workstation. In vmware workstation I installed an ESXI 5.5 with 2 network adapters bridged to 2 physical NICs on my server and both of the physial NICs are connected to an 2960 switch. VMNIC 0 is an access port used for management and VMNIC 1 is a trunk port that I wanna use for PROD. I also configured a trunk port on my WIN 2k12.

I'm managing the ESXI via vsphere 6 SSO. I created all my VMs on the ESXI server.

Vswitch0 is using VMNIC0 and Vswitch1 is using VMNIC 1.

The problem I'm having is that I'm not able to ping outside my ESXI from a new port group. I'm able to get out on the management network but can't on VMNIC1.

vm network is the management network and I can ping out from any vm when I put its network card on it. But from any other port group I create I can't(for example DMZ-VLAN-50). Although I can ping between the vms if they're put on the same port group.

I enabled trunking on the mgmt interface on the ESXi only.

Note that vm network is using VMNIC 0 bridged to a network card and connected to an access port switch

and

the other new port groups are using VMNIC 1

If this is unclear please let me answer your question so I explain further.

iSCSI VVOL datastores go into the "inactive" state after creation via the vcenter side VASA

I'm using the vcenter VASA to create an iSCSI VVOL and it creates fine. The only problem is that the datastore comes up with 0.0KB capacity and then grays out and goes into the "inactive" state. Is there a document I can follow to see if there is any special networking I need to do? Are there things I can check? I'm using NetApps. It has OnTap 8.3 installed on it

ttyUSB0 seen by guest but no characters or data in or out

Good morning or afternoon,

I can see my ttyUSB0 in the host and send and receive data all day but ...

... when I disconnect the device from the host and connect to a Linux guest ... everything seems fine but I can't get or send data.

(both host and guest are Ubuntu 16.04)

(Workstation Pro 12)

lsusb on the guest yields:

Bus 001 Device 005: ID 0557:2008 ATEN International Co., Ltd UC-232A Serial Port [pl2303]

On host:

Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0557:2008 ATEN International Co., Ltd UC-232A Serial Port [pl2303]

Any ideas?

I see /dev/ttyUSB0 disappear from host and appear on guest when I connect to guest and visa versa when re-connect to host.

I'm pretty sure I've been able to do this on other VMs in the past, but I haven't worked with a Linux VM for a while.
Is this a known problem, or might there be something goofed-up in my system?

Error when connecting to the ESXi Web interface

Anyone know how to fix this issue?  It started happening seemingly at random.  I've tried rebooting the host and clearing my browser cache, along with using a variety of other browsers.

The error reads

Unhandled Exception

Unfortunately, we hit an error that we weren't expecting.

The client may continue working, but at this point, we recommend refreshing your browser and submitting a bug report.

HELP: Running ESXi 4.1 host just lost it's boot disk

$

One of our ESXi 4.1 servers lost a drive in it's Raid-1 boot array about a week ago.  No biggie, bought new drive, inserted new drive today, array began rebuild.  Other drive fails during rebuild.  "F&%K!" I screamed.

Good news is the VMs are still running as is ESXi' as far as I can tell.  I know though as soon ESXi needs to read/write to a log file or something it's all going to come crashing down.

So the question is, since I don't have vmotion and I don't have another suitable host anyway, how long do I have before ESXi dies?  Do I have enough time to get a new server (10 days)?  Should I put a really powerful working up quick (overnight)?  Or is best to shut the VMs down now and deal with outage?

A few bits of information.  The VMs are stored completely on a shared NFS array, not on the hosts' physical storage.  The host has dual power supplies each tied to separate battery backups each on their own circuit.  I don't think power will bring them down.  The host is starved for RAM (thanks Exchange) and was planned to be replaced before year's end.  Only thing running on the host is ESXi itself.  It was loaded to the boot array.  Everything else is stored on the NFS systems.

Analyzing ESX-caused kernel panic

We have a Debian 8 VM that enters a kernel panic when booting up on ESXi 6. If I edit the VM settings and change the configure OS from "Debian 7" to "Windows NT" the kernel panic resolves and the VM works fine. This has now happened several times on several different hosts, in some cases before the VM was upgraded and was still running Debian 7; on the other hand, in most hosts (including ESXi 6) the same VM runs fine with no kernel panics.

These VMs are running in customer environments, so I'm unable to debug the problem on-line. What could be causing this, and what logs/information should I collect the next time it happens to be able to analyze it effectively?

VCAP certification - where to start.. Deploy or Design ?

hi all

I recently got my vcp 6 and I'm interested in getting my VCAP but I'm not sure where to start...

id like to get both VCAPs but I'm not sure which one would be the better one to start with...

Deploy or Design... which one would be the better option?

to those who already have their VCAP ... where did you start and how did you go about preparing for the exam?

I don't really want to spend 3 grand on a design and deploy fast track course... even though its not required but recommended.. its way too expensive !

thanks!

VDP Replication Job stuck at 92%

This is a new setup I'm testing before rolling it out to all my sites.

I have a replication job configured that only has one small VM of about 20GB but it never gets past 92%. It spawns a destination task that also never gets past 98%. I originally had multiple VMs in the replication job but removed them because I thought maybe it was just taking a really long time to replicate, however with just the one small VM it still never seems to finish and will run for days until the job is suppose to start again at the scheduled weekly time.

Both appliances are using Data Domains for storage and VDP is 6.1

Where should I start to troubleshoot?

Surface Pro 4 and VM Workstation 12 Scaling

$

Hi

I have a Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10 and VMWare Workstation 12 (12.1.1), using Mac OS X (10.11.6) as the guest OS

Has anyone solved the scaling issue when using VMWare 12 Player  and Mac OS X as the guest VM. The Mac guest VM text/menus etc. are so small/unreadable on the screen of the Surface Pro 4. The Surface tablet screen is 2736 x 1824 and Windows 10 scaling is set to 225%. I also have 2 x Mac 27" cinema monitors running through a Surface dock at 2560 x 1400.

I have tried amending the VMPlayer exe file compatibility to Win 8 and not to scale

The VM Machine display settings are set to Use Host settings for Monitor. If I adjust it to say 1920 x 1440 it just makes the windows running on the Pro 4 smaller. Does not scape the text etc within the VM machine up

When running the VM Wokrstation and Mac OS guest on the Surface screen natively (no ext monitors) everything is unreadibly small, but when running on one of the ext monitors all is perfectly workable

I have tried a manifest file but VMPlayer refuses to start using the external manifest file.

Ideas anyone???

Thanks

how can I troubleshoot a multiple MACID issue on a single machine's NIC?

$

Background:

I'm running pfsense v2.3.2 as VM instance on ESXi 6.0 and using it as my main router.

My specific situation is that I have a cable modem connection with multiple static IPs.  The modem is in bridge mode.  Normally I would just assign one main IP to the router WAN interface, and then assign the other static IPs as virtual IPs to the same interface. However, apparently this ISP requires that each static IP be associated with a single unique MACID.

It seems that in this situation that setting the Virtual IPs as CARP IPs is the tool for ensuring that each Virtual IP has a different MACID.  Apparently using the CARP protocol is supposed to result in each Virtual IP automatically having a unique MACID.

It isn't working for me.

Problem:

I've followed the directions here:https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/CARP_Configuration_Troubleshooting#Hypervisor_users_.28Especially_VMware_ESX.2FESXi.29 and enabled Promiscuous Mode and allowed MAC Address Changes and Forged Transmits in the ESXi settings for the Network adapter.

The connection still behaves as if I've assigned multiple IPs to the same MACID (which is to say it doesn't work).  Of course I've reset the modem several times and it makes no difference.

It seems to me that either CARP is not working as it should on the pfsense side, or there is an underlying compatibility problem with ESXi and it is not allowing multiple MACiDs to exist on the same interface, and therefore is not passing on those CARP MACIDs to the modem.

Question:

Obviously this is not a pfsense forum, and the problem may be with the pfsense side.  My question is how can I approach this from the ESXi side?  Perhaps if I login to the ESXi machine via SSH, is there a way I can check what IPs and what MACIDs are active on a particular virtual NIC on a specific machine?  Are there any other troubleshooting tools or steps that I can use from the ESXi side to figure out exactly what is going on here in terms of multiple IPs and MACIDs?

Upgrade from vSphere 5.1/vCenter 5.1 to vSphere 6.0/vCenter 6.0

$

0

I have not done a migration in some time.

I have 8 hosts running vSphere 5.1 and a vCenter 5.1.0 (1064983) vm.

I have a few different storage units that are used on this cluster.

All datastores are formatted as vmfs5.

Host 1 was removed from the cluster and vSphere 6.0.0 (3620759) loaded on it.

The two fiber cables were removed to ensure there were no issues with the shared storage.

A 6.0 vCSA was loaded on the local datastore of host 1, which I will move as soon as I have shared storage connected.

My question is, will I suffer any issues if I plug the fiber in and have the 6.0 vCenter see all of the storage my vCenter 5.1 sees?

I would like to migrate all of the vm's from host 2 to host 1 and then build host 2 and add it to the 6.0 cluster and continue like this until all 8 hosts are in the vCenter 6.0 datacenter.

The way I've done this in the past was with one shared LUN to use as a migration LUN between the two vCenters, but that was because it was a newer vmfs.

Will what I stated above, work without issue?

Thanks in advance!

Has anyone used smart cards successfully with blast? Any issues with it? Did you use the access point or a security server? Is the set up the same? I cannot find any documentation on it.
